The Sea That Was Moved: The Aral Sea and Moynaq

At Moynaq, in the far west of Uzbekistan, fishing boats lie rusting on dry sand with no water in sight. This was a busy port. The sea it worked is now around 150 kilometres away, and much of it will never come back. The Aral Sea is not a place that is disappearing — it is a place that has largely already gone, within a single human lifetime, and the ships are what it left behind.

The Aral Sea sits on the border of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In 1960 it was one of the largest lakes on Earth. Then it was, in effect, moved — its water redirected onto cotton fields hundreds of kilometres away — and it collapsed. Visiting it is not a scenic trip. It is one of the clearest, most sobering things you can go and stand in front of: the visible result of a decision about water.

What actually happened

Beginning in the 1960s, the Soviet Union diverted the two great rivers that fed the sea — the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya — to irrigate cotton and other crops in the surrounding desert. Starved of its inflow, the sea began to fall. According to NASA, since 1960 the Aral Sea has lost roughly 88 per cent of its surface area and about 92 per cent of its water volume; by the mid-2020s the water remaining is a small fraction of what was there in 1960. Landsat and MODIS satellites have tracked the retreat, decade by decade, and the images are among the most-cited evidence of large-scale, human-caused environmental change anywhere.

This was not a drought. The rivers still flow. They were simply pointed somewhere else, and the sea did the arithmetic.

What was left behind on the exposed seabed is a new desert — the Aralkum — covering on the order of 60,000 square kilometres. It is not inert. Laden with salt and with the residues of decades of pesticides and fertilisers, its dust is picked up by the wind into storms that carry across the region, and international bodies including the World Bank have documented the resulting harm to air quality, agriculture and human health. Part of visiting responsibly is understanding that the "empty" desert you are looking at is also a source of the region's ongoing problems.

Moynaq: the ship graveyard

The single most visited relic of all this is the ship cemetery at Moynaq (Muynak), in the Karakalpakstan region. Once a thriving fishing town on the water, Moynaq now looks out over dry land, with a line of rusted trawlers set on the former seabed and a museum that tells the story of the sea's rise and fall. It has become a place of memory and, increasingly, of a small, careful tourism — jeep trips run out across the Aralkum toward the distant current shoreline, and an electronic-music festival has even been held on the dried seabed in recent years.

Most travellers reach Moynaq via Nukus, the regional capital, which is also home to the Savitsky Museum and its remarkable collection of Soviet avant-garde art — one of the reasons a trip out here is usually built as a two- or three-day loop rather than a single stop.

The one part that is coming back

The story is not uniformly hopeless, and it is important to say so accurately. In the north, in Kazakhstan, a dam project — the Kok-Aral dam, supported by international funding — was built to hold back the flow of the Syr Darya and concentrate it in the North Aral Sea. That smaller northern basin has partially recovered: the water has risen, fishing has returned in places, and the difference from the abandoned southern sea is stark. The large South Aral, in Uzbekistan, has not recovered in the same way, and much of it is not expected to. Uzbekistan's response has focused instead on planting the dried seabed to hold down the toxic dust, and on developing the kind of careful eco- and cultural tourism that a visit here supports.

Why the Silence Index is 72

High. This is genuinely remote — the far west of Uzbekistan, a flight or a long journey from Tashkent to Nukus and then a further road trip to Moynaq — and it sees a fraction of the visitors of the Silk Road cities. The Aralkum itself is vast, empty and quiet in a way that is almost overwhelming, and the emptiness is the point.

What keeps it from scoring higher is that Moynaq specifically is now an established stop, with a museum, a memorial and a growing trickle of organised tours, and the occasional festival brings a crowd to a place that is otherwise silent. Away from the ship cemetery, out on the Aralkum or up toward the current water's edge, you are about as alone as this journal gets.

Getting there — Tashkent → Nukus → Moynaq

Nukus has the widest choice of accommodation and is the usual base. Moynaq has simpler guesthouse options for those who want to be at the ship graveyard at dawn or dusk, when the light and the silence are at their most affecting.

The Savitsky Museum in Nukus is the essential cultural counterpart to the disaster outside. Further afield, the desert fortresses of ancient Khorezm (the Elliq-Qala) lie between Nukus and Khiva, and Khiva's walled old town is one of Central Asia's most complete.
