In 1964 a French team reported coesite from the Richat — a high-pressure form of silica that, at the time, was about the strongest single argument that something had struck Mauritania. Five years later a Smithsonian mineralogist re-ran the X-ray work on the same shattered sandstone and found the reflections belonged to barite, carried into a permeable crushed zone by groundwater. The rock was a tectonic breccia from a shear zone. No shocked mineral has been found there since. What the structure has produced instead is a swarm of carbonatite dykes, a kimberlite plug, a three-kilometre raft of silicified rubble, and a dating problem that a 2024 paper reopened rather than closed.

The Richat Structure sits on the Adrar plateaus of northern Mauritania, inside the Taoudeni Basin — a sedimentary province covering on the order of two million square kilometres of West Africa. Seen from orbit it is unmistakable: a slightly elliptical set of concentric ridges about 40 kilometres across, orange and grey, arranged like a target. NASA, which has kept returning to it since Gemini IV astronauts Ed White and James McDivitt photographed it in 1965, puts the problem neatly — the feature is hard to recognise from the ground and obvious from space. That asymmetry is the whole story of how it was misread.
What the rings are made of is ordinary. The host rocks are Late Proterozoic to Lower Palaeozoic sandstones and quartzitic sandstones interbedded with softer mudstones, laid down flat in a shallow basin and then bowed upward into a dome. Erosion has since planed the dome off, leaving the tilted layers cropping out as circular cuestas that dip outward at ten to twenty degrees. In the middle of that bullseye is the strange part: a body of polymictic breccia roughly three kilometres in diameter and up to forty metres thick, made of white to dark grey cherty material, quartz-rich sandstone, chert nodules and silicified stromatolitic limestone, all cemented by microcrystalline quartz. The fragments have barely travelled — centimetres to metres.
Around and within that centre is an igneous inventory no impact could deposit. Two narrow gabbroic bodies form concentric rings, the outer at Tin Jouker some seven to eight kilometres from the centre and the inner at Guelb Richat about three kilometres out, each only tens of metres wide. There is a carbonatite dyke swarm in the southern and western sectors — more than sixty dykes, mostly a third of a metre to a metre and a half thick, plus two necks. There is a kimberlite plug in the north, alkaline rocks cutting the inner ring, a hydrothermally altered diatreme, the remnant of what has been read as a small maar, and analcimolites composed of more than three-quarters analcime. Two radiometric anchors put the alkaline event in the mid-Cretaceous: apatite fission-track dating of a carbonatite gives 99 ± 5 million years, and argon-argon dating of neoformed potassium feldspar in the central breccia gives 98.2 ± 2.6 million years.
The impact hypothesis did not survive contact with the outcrop. Dietz, Fudali and Cassidy published the negative result in the Geological Society of America Bulletin in 1969, and the sentence that mattered was blunt: field examination of the structure and petrographic study of the critical rock types failed to reveal a single feature attributable to shock processes. No shatter cones, no planar deformation features, no impact melt, no ejecta. The one mineralogical claim in favour — the 1964 coesite report — had already been dismantled by Fudali in Science the same year. Nothing since has reinstated it.
It is worth being concrete, because Mauritania is not short of impact craters. Tenoumer, elsewhere in the country, is 1.9 kilometres across and contains three distinct types of impact melt rock; argon-argon dating of that melt gives a weighted mean age of 1.57 ± 0.14 million years. Aouelloul is smaller still. That is what a confirmed impact structure of modest size looks like: small, young, full of melted rock. The Richat is twenty times wider, orders of magnitude older, and has no melt at all.
The Atlantis version deserves less space than it gets. Plato's account is a dialogue, not a survey; the Richat's rings are bedding planes in Precambrian and Palaeozoic marine sediment, not masonry; and no peer-reviewed archaeology has reported a built landscape there. Mauritania's documented urban past is neither hypothetical nor underwater. It is standing in stone at Ouadâne and Chinguetti, and UNESCO inscribed it in 1996.
What is actually in dispute
The interesting arguments about the Richat are internal to geology, and one of them was reopened as recently as 2024.
The standard modern account came from a Quebec-led field programme. Matton, Jébrak and Lee, writing in Geology in 2005, described a dome at least 40 kilometres across whose circular ridges are simply erosion working on tilted strata, and read the central breccia as hydrothermal karst infill: doming and hot fluids together made the conditions for large-scale dissolution, and the collapse debris was silicified in place. Their conclusion was that the Richat is the superficial expression of a Cretaceous alkaline complex with an exceptionally well preserved hydrothermal karst filling. Matton and Jébrak developed that at length in the Journal of African Earth Sciences in 2014. A 2021 study integrating airborne magnetics with satellite gravity then found two circular magnetic signals over the gabbro rings, an intensely altered central zone, and — the important part — a deep mafic body underneath the whole structure.
Then, in 2024, a paper in Lithos pulled the timeline apart. Abdeina and co-authors dated plagioclase from the two gabbro bodies by argon-argon. One sample was unusable, contaminated by excess argon. Numerical modelling of the other pointed to intrusion somewhere between about 230 and 200 million years ago — Triassic, not Cretaceous. Their reading is that the Richat has a two-stage igneous history separated by roughly a hundred million years: first tholeiitic gabbro emplaced during the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, the vast pulse of basaltic magmatism that accompanied the opening of the Atlantic and peaked around 201 million years ago; then, at about 99 million years, a separate alkaline intrusion that domed the cover, drove the hydrothermal system and produced the carbonatites and kimberlite.
That reframing carries a structural sting. If the gabbros are CAMP, they are probably not ring dykes at all. The 2024 authors note that ring-dyke geometries have never been documented in the CAMP system, whereas concordant sills are ubiquitous in it, and that their field observations — hampered by poor exposure and sand cover — point to concordant relationships between the gabbros and the sedimentary country rocks. On that reading the two "rings" are flat sheets that were later bent into a dome and then sliced by erosion, so that their outcrop traces are circles for the same reason the sandstone ridges are circles. Independent institutional data are at least consistent with it: the geophysical synthesis produced by the United States Geological Survey with Mauritania's Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines attributes positive magnetic anomalies over the Taoudeni Basin most likely to Jurassic dolerite sills and feeders within the sedimentary section.
The 2024 paper ends by naming its own unfinished business, unusually cleanly: were the gabbros emplaced as ring dykes or as sills, and when did the doming responsible for the concentric structure actually occur? To which it adds that the composition of the still-buried intrusion is unknown. A fourth question sits above those. The Richat is one node in what Matton and Jébrak called the Cretaceous Peri-Atlantic Alkaline Pulse, a scatter of alkaline and carbonatitic centres around the young Atlantic; whether that pulse was driven by a deep mantle plume or by shallow lithospheric break-up was the question in the title of their 2009 Tectonophysics paper, and it has not been settled.
Why it looks like that
The mechanism is worth learning properly, because it explains why a circle on a satellite image is weak evidence of anything.
Start with flat rock. The Taoudeni sequence here alternates hard and soft: quartzitic sandstones that resist abrasion, mudstones that do not. Now push it up from below. An intrusion rising into the crust does not need to reach the surface to deform it; it only needs to inflate. The overlying layers arch into a dome, and because the push is roughly radial, the dip of the beds is roughly radial too — everything tilts away from the centre.
Now take the top off. Erosion in a hyper-arid setting works by abrasion and by removing weathered fines, and it works fastest on the weakest material. Planing the dome flat cuts down through the arch, exposing successively deeper layers inward, and every layer's outcrop trace is a ring because that is what an arched surface looks like in plan. The hard sandstones stand as ridges with a steep inward-facing scarp and a gentle outward dip slope — cuestas. The mudstones between them are stripped into corridors. Repeat for each competent bed and you get nested rings.
The rings are not the rim of anything that landed. They are the cut edges of rock layers that were bent upward and then shaved flat — a bullseye is simply what a dome looks like after you remove the dome.
The centre is a second mechanism layered on the first. Doming fractures rock, fracturing makes it permeable, and a cooling alkaline intrusion supplies hot, chemically aggressive fluid. Where that fluid met soluble carbonate it dissolved cavities; the cavities grew, the roofs failed, the debris fell in — the positive-feedback loop of karst, powered from below rather than by rain from above. The 2005 study read the central breccia this way, with the same fluids later flooding the collapsed mass with silica and precipitating laminated sediment and neoformed potassium feldspar into the remaining voids. That is why the breccia is a cemented body rather than a loose pile, why its clasts have moved only centimetres to metres, and why the feldspar could be dated at all — to 98.2 ± 2.6 million years, in agreement with the carbonatite.
The corollary matters for anyone who reads satellite imagery. Circular is cheap. A survey team from Nouakchott, Toulouse and Casablanca searched Mauritanian imagery for circular features and logged fifty new ones between 60 metres and 7.5 kilometres across, many in the Taoudeni Basin, before beginning the slow work of testing which — if any — are impacts. Domes, salt structures, collapsed karst, volcanic vents, folded strata weathering unevenly: all round, none of them craters. Confirmation requires shocked minerals, not shape.

Two wrong versions of the Richat circulate in the same places — social posts built around the satellite view, listicles of unexplained places, casual guidebook summaries. The first states that the Eye of the Sahara is a meteorite crater, or hedges that science has never decided. It decided in 1969. Dietz, Fudali and Cassidy reported in the Geological Society of America Bulletin that field examination and petrographic study failed to reveal a single feature attributable to shock processes, and Fudali showed in Science the same year that the one mineral claim in favour — the 1964 coesite report — was barite in a tectonic breccia. The IUGS geological heritage inventory now records the impact hypothesis as disproved in favour of an intrusion theory. The crater is not a live hypothesis; it is a caption error.
The second wrong version reasons from shape alone: it looks like a bullseye, so something must have struck it. The preceding section explains why that inference fails; the comparison cases finish it. Tenoumer, Mauritania's confirmed crater, is 1.9 kilometres across, 1.57 million years old and full of impact melt; the Richat is twenty times wider, orders of magnitude older, and has none. The survey team from Nouakchott, Toulouse and Casablanca has logged fifty further circular features in Mauritanian imagery — which is what a desert does with domes, salt and karst, not a record of bombardment.
What the mystery framing obscures is that the honest version is better. We would rather report the questions the 2024 Lithos paper actually left open — ring dykes or sills, the timing of the doming, the unsampled intrusion beneath the centre — than a solved question dressed as unsolvable.
How to actually see it
The United Kingdom's FCDO, in advice published on 24 March 2026, advises against all travel to eastern Mauritania — the area east of a line between, but excluding, the towns of Kankossa, Akhreijit, Ghallaouia, Zouerat and Fderîck — and to areas within 25 km of the Malian border in the south, including Khabou. Separately it advises against all but essential travel to a longer list that includes areas of Adrar province, with an exclusion carved out for the area west of a line drawn between Choum, Ouadâne and the point where the tenth meridian west meets latitude 18°40′, plus the town of Ouadâne itself. Read literally, that exclusion does not reach the Richat, which lies north-east of Ouadâne; the structure therefore sits inside the area to which the FCDO advises against all but essential travel. That is a reading of a published boundary, not a quotation, and the live text and map should be checked rather than taken on trust.
The United States has Mauritania at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory reissued on 15 July 2025. Its off-limits list has three parts: the areas the Mauritanian military designates, everything north of the Tropic of Cancer, and everything within 100 kilometres of the Mali and Algeria borders. The Richat, at roughly 21°N and 11.5°W, falls outside all three — the Tropic runs at about 23°26′N, well to the north of it. France, in advice last updated on 11 March 2026, colours the far north and east red, places the Nouadhibou–Zouérat corridor and the ground north of a Choum–Aghouedir line in orange, and leaves the remainder under reinforced vigilance. France also states the rules that matter more than the colour: experienced guides, convoys of at least two vehicles, and full declaration at checkpoints of passengers, phone contacts, vehicle registration and a precise itinerary that should not then change. The FCDO's version is shorter and says the same — travel in convoy with an experienced guide when leaving urban areas.
Against that, the region is being deliberately reopened. Al Jazeera reported in June 2026 that there has been no attack on tourists in Mauritania since 2011; the incident that collapsed the trade and pushed the Dakar Rally permanently out of the country was the killing of four French tourists near Aleg on Christmas Eve 2007. Arrivals rose sharply after visa fees were cut at the end of the 2010s, and the piece put recent annual numbers at roughly 7,000 against a historical figure nearer 30,000.
Access is seasonal and it is thin. The Mauritanian news agency AMI reported that the 2025–26 charter season into Atar ran to twelve flights from Paris, the first arriving in December 2025 with 103 passengers and the twelfth on 7 March 2026, and that the Adrar received 1,344 visitors from nineteen countries across the whole season, with load factors above 75 per cent. That is the realistic scale of tourism in this region: not thousands a week, but roughly a thousand people a year, arriving in a three-month window. Outside it, reaching Atar means the long road from Nouakchott.
From Atar the route runs through Chinguetti and on to Ouadâne, both components of the World Heritage property inscribed in 1996 as the Ancient Ksour of Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt and Oualata under criteria (iii), (iv) and (v) — caravan towns founded in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, courtyard houses along narrow lanes around mosques with square minarets. The Richat is 45 km north of Ouadâne by the government's own figure, reached by 4x4 on desert track. There is no visitor centre, no gate, no ticket and no published permit.
That may not last. Mauritania's Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has announced the creation of a protected natural area at Guelb Richât in the Ouadâne district, framed as part of the country's commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity, and in March 2026 an ecotourism training workshop was held there under the ministry's IMPADRA project, with consultations on joint management of the reserve. Assume the rules may change and ask locally what currently applies. The structure is not on Mauritania's UNESCO Tentative List, but it is listed by the International Union of Geological Sciences among its geological heritage sites, as an example of a magmatic concentric alkaline complex.
The cheaper and quieter counterpart to the Adrar circuit is the desert railway, and it should not be sold as a shortcut to the Richat, because it is not one. SNIM's iron-ore line runs more than 700 km from Zouérat to Nouadhibou; in November 2025 the African Development Bank and EIB Global committed US$275 million to rehabilitate it and add 42 km of track. France's official guidance records that the trains carry passenger cars, while stating plainly that travelling aboard the ore wagons themselves is dangerous and strictly forbidden — a point on which a great deal of online travel writing is casually wrong. Note also where the line runs: its northern end is Zouérat, in Tiris Zemmour, and the Nouadhibou–Zouérat corridor is precisely the ground France places in its orange zone. The railway is real and documented. It is not a way around the advisories.
Why the Silence Index is 86
The Richat is the most photographed obscure place on Earth, and that contradiction is what the score has to capture.
Footfall pressure is genuinely low and the numbers are official: the entire Adrar region logged 1,344 charter visitors across the 2025–26 season. Even allowing for overland and domestic travel, the structure sees a few thousand people a year at most, spread across forty kilometres of desert with no infrastructure to concentrate them. Set against that, it is a fixture on every Adrar itinerary and the government is actively promoting it. This is not an unvisited place; it is a lightly visited famous one, and the component loses points for trajectory rather than for volume.
Access friction is high but not extreme: an e-visa obtained before departure, a three-month charter window or a long road from the capital, a 4x4 leg on desert track, checkpoints requiring a declared and unchanging itinerary, and guidance from three governments urging convoy travel with a guide. What keeps it below the ceiling is that none of this is prohibition. Ouadâne is explicitly excluded from the FCDO's advisory area, the site is south of the US off-limits line, and there is no permit regime and no closed season.
The acoustic floor is close to as low as land gets. This is deep Sahara: no through traffic, no settlement inside the rings, no overflight corridor, minimal rainfall — official French advice records that April to October regularly exceeds 40°C, and reporting on nearby Chinguetti gives average annual rainfall over the past decade of about 2.5 centimetres. The only sustained sound is wind and, when anyone is there, diesel engines.
Unresolved questions score well, and honestly so. The 2024 Lithos paper leaves three explicit gaps on the record — ring dykes or sills, the timing of the doming, the unknown composition of the buried intrusion — and what drove the Cretaceous alkaline pulse around the Atlantic remains open. The score credits none of the manufactured mystery. It credits the fact that a structure this famous still has an argument about its own age running in a 2024 journal.
Eighty-six, then: quiet, awkward to reach, scientifically unfinished, and steadily better known for the wrong reason.
The most useful thing about the Richat is not that it resembles something else. It is that it is a cross-section — a dome opened and laid flat, so that rock from different depths can be walked across in an afternoon instead of drilled for. What was mistaken for a wound is closer to a diagram. The rings are still argued about, the intrusion beneath them has never been sampled, and the desert is doing to Chinguetti's streets what it long ago did to the top of this dome. It is worth taking seriously on its own terms, without needing it to be a crater or a city.

Getting there — Atar (ATR) → Ouadâne → Guelb er Richât
- An e-visa authorisation must be obtained before travel; visa on arrival ended on 5 January 2025. The FCDO states that e-visa fees are paid on arrival in exact cash in euros or US dollars, and that passports must be valid for six months beyond arrival.
- Atar is the regional gateway. In the 2025–26 season it received twelve charter flights from Paris between December and early March; outside that window, access to the Adrar means the road from Nouakchott.
- From Atar the circuit runs via Chinguetti to Ouadâne, both UNESCO-inscribed. The Richat lies 45 km north of Ouadâne on desert track, reachable only by 4x4.
- FCDO advice is to travel in convoy with an experienced guide when leaving urban areas, to use a 4x4 and to avoid driving at night. French advice specifies convoys of at least two vehicles.

Where to stay
Visitor accommodation in the Adrar clusters in Atar, Chinguetti and Ouadâne rather than at the structure itself, and runs from simple auberges and family guesthouses to desert camps. There is no official approved-lodging list, so any specific recommendation is commercial rather than sanctioned. Bed stock is small and the charter season is short — twelve flights carried the bulk of 2025–26's 1,344 recorded visitors into a three-month window — so booking ahead through whoever is arranging the 4x4 is the practical approach. Power is often generator-supplied and available only part of the day, and mobile coverage thins rapidly outside the towns. Chinguetti is worth a night in its own right: the AP reported in February 2025 that shifting dunes are burying parts of the old town at a rate residents measure in inches to feet a year, with more than a dozen libraries holding thousands of manuscripts inside the affected quarter.
Safety & responsible travel
- Take nothing from the ground. The central breccia, the carbonatite dykes and the silicified clasts are the scientific value of the site, and the questions about it are still open — collecting is not harmless souvenir-hunting here.
- Do not drive off established tracks. Vehicle scarring in hyper-arid terrain persists for decades and the ridge-and-corridor pattern makes new lines easy to cut and impossible to erase.
- Hire guides and drivers locally in Atar, Chinguetti or Ouadâne. Tourism revenue in the Adrar is thin, concentrated in a three-month season, and is the working argument for protecting the site.
- Respect Ouadâne and Chinguetti as living World Heritage, not scenery. Ask before photographing people, buildings and manuscript collections, and pay for library visits where a charge is asked.
- Carry out everything, including grey water and cigarette ends. There is no waste collection anywhere near the structure.
- Do not attempt to ride the ore wagons on the SNIM railway. French official guidance describes it as dangerous and strictly forbidden, whatever online accounts suggest.
Nearby, and quieter
Ouadâne, 45 km south, is the nearest inhabited place and one of the four Ancient Ksour inscribed by UNESCO in 1996 — a ruined and partly reoccupied caravan town on a scarp above a palm valley. Chinguetti, further south-west on the road back to Atar, is the best known of the four and the most urgent: its manuscript libraries sit inside a quarter that encroaching dunes are steadily burying. Atar itself is the regional capital, the charter airport and the practical base for arranging vehicles. Further out, the Adrar's canyons, oases and the Terjit gorge are on the same circuit. Mauritania's two confirmed impact craters, Tenoumer and Aouelloul, lie elsewhere in the country and both sit within areas covered by government travel advisories.

Editor’s method note — what we checked, corrected and could not verify
- Desk research only. Nobody from this publication has been to the Adrar. The geology here is settled enough that a visit would add photographs rather than facts; the access section is a different matter, and everything in it is quoted from the three governments that publish advice on Mauritania rather than from any operator.
- The structure is not an impact crater, and this dossier states that without hedging. The negative result is Dietz, Fudali and Cassidy in the GSA Bulletin in 1969, and the single mineralogical argument for impact — the 1964 coesite report — was withdrawn by Fudali in Science the same year, the reflections proving to be barite carried into a crushed zone by groundwater. Nothing since has reinstated it, and no peer-reviewed archaeology reports a built landscape there. We give the Atlantis claim one paragraph because that is more than it has earned.
- We updated the American advisory. This dossier described the US off-limits areas as everything north of the Tropic of Cancer and everything east of 8°W within 100 km of the Mali border. The current Level 3 advisory, reissued on 15 July 2025, drops the 8°W wording and reads: areas marked off-limits by the Mauritanian military, all areas north of the Tropic of Cancer, and all areas within 100 km of the Mali and Algeria borders. The Richat, at roughly 21°N and 11.5°W, still falls outside all three, but the sentence describing them was wrong and has been rewritten.
- The British boundary is a reading, not a quotation, and we say so in the piece. The FCDO's exclusion from its 'all but essential travel' area is drawn west of a line between Choum, Ouadâne and the point where the tenth meridian west meets latitude 18°40′, plus the town of Ouadâne. Read literally that exclusion does not reach a structure 45 kilometres north-east of Ouadâne. We were unable to obtain the FCDO's map to check the drawn boundary against our reading of the text.

Abdeina and colleagues, in Lithos in 2024, date plagioclase from the gabbro to between about 230 and 200 million years and read the two 'rings' as Central Atlantic Magmatic Province sills later bent into a dome rather than ring dykes. We do not average two hundred million years. We report a two-stage history as the 2024 authors propose it, and we report that they themselves leave the question open.
