Five People a Week: The Altamira Reopening That Never Happened

In March 2015 the board of the Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira agreed what the Ministry of Culture's own page calls un estricto régimen de acceso de cinco personas a la semana — a strict access regime of five people a week. It was framed as a monitored trial following a two-year research programme set up to decide whether human presence and the survival of the paintings are compatible at all. Eleven years later it is still five a week, and no document we could find declares the trial over.

What this dossier is built from

Nobody from this publication has been to Altamira, and on the numbers below we would not spend one of the available places on a dossier. What follows is desk research: the Spanish Ministry of Culture's conservation pages, read in both their Spanish and English versions, which turn out not to agree with one another; the ministry's conservation research bibliography, which runs from 1981 to 2024 and is almost entirely made of gas measurements; UNESCO's inscription record and Spain's 2024 periodic report; the ICOMOS evaluations of 1985 and 2008; peer-reviewed papers on radon, carbon dioxide, moisture and microbial communities; two newsletters of the Spanish research network on cultural heritage, in which the museum's own directors and a CSIC microbiology team set out incompatible positions; the French Ministry of Culture's Lascaux pages; and a gazetteer.

It is a story about a decision that has never been rescinded and is almost never reported as still in force.

The received version, which circulates through English-language travel writing, guidebook copy and general news coverage, runs like this: Altamira was closed because tourism was destroying it, scientists studied the problem, the problem was solved, and the cave reopened to visitors in 2015. The replica — the Neocueva, inside the museum next door — is now simply the ordinary way in.

Half of that is right, and it is the dull half. The replica really is how essentially everyone sees Altamira. Spain's 2024 periodic report to UNESCO gives, for the five years since the previous report, museum attendance of 251,424, 131,128, 98,802, 277,474 and 287,929, against cave visitors of 239, 238, 136, 245 and 255. ICOMOS recorded the museum as taking 270,000 people a year as far back as 2008. The proportions are not in dispute.

The other half is wrong in three separate places, and the primary record is unusually blunt about it.

First, nothing was solved. The 2012–2014 Programa de Investigación para la Conservación Preventiva y Régimen de Acceso was not set up to design a visiting scheme. The ministry states its object plainly: to determine the impact of human presence on the conservation of the paintings, con el fin de decidir si es compatible su adecuada conservación con un régimen de visita a la cueva — in order to decide whether proper conservation is compatible with a regime of visits at all. That is an open question being asked, not a closed one being answered.

Second, what followed was not a reopening. The ministry's account of March 2015 is a single sentence and it is not celebratory: a strict access regime of five people a week. Five a week is 260 a year, which is why the cave figures above sit just under that ceiling and never above it. A reopening is a change of status. This is a cap.

Third, the year is unstable even in the sources that ought to be firmest. Sáez and colleagues, writing in Scientific Reports in 2024 with co-authors from the CSIC team that has monitored the cave for decades, say access "was resumed in 2014 although restricted to a very low number of visitors (5 per week)". The ministry dates the board's decision to March 2015. Both are probably describing the same process — experimental entries first, a formalised regime afterwards — and we print both rather than choosing.

A microclimate a rockfall made, and three dates for one closure

The ministry's explanation of why Altamira is fragile is a good piece of writing and worth following exactly. A collapse about 13,000 years ago destroyed and plugged the entrance, and it was that plug which allowed the interior to hold a high climatic stability for the next thirteen millennia. The paintings did not survive because limestone is durable. They survived because a rockfall accidentally built a sealed vessel around them, and everything done at Altamira since 1977 has been an attempt to put the lid back on.

Twentieth-century tourism took the lid off. Visitor numbers passed 100,000 a year after 1964. The museum's own directors, writing in 2006, record over 175,000 visitors in 1973; Sáez and colleagues give a peak of 174,613 visits in 1972. We have not reconciled those and do not need to: they describe the same catastrophe a year apart.

Then the state closed it, and here the record goes quietly strange. The ministry's Spanish page says su cierre al público en 1977. The English translation of the same page, on the same site, says the destabilisation "brought about its closure in 1979". The 2024 Scientific Reports paper describes a first closure running 1978–1982. Three years are published for one event, two of them by the same ministry on the same page in two languages. We are not going to average them. We note only that a national administration that has monitored this cave continuously for four decades has not settled the date on which it shut the door.

It reopened in 1982 under a restricted regime of 8,500 people a year, in groups of five with a guide and ten minutes at the ceiling. The group of five is worth holding onto; it is the same number that now constitutes an entire week. And the cap was not the reality. Sáez and colleagues put actual attendance across 1982–2002 at 11,320 visitors a year on average, against a published ceiling of 8,500. On preventive conservation grounds the cave closed again in 2002.

The dull machinery in between

Between 1997 and 2001 the Spanish state did something that gets no coverage at all because it photographs badly. It bought land in the cave's zone of influence, removed rural tracks and nearby livestock installations, and diverted both the road and the museum access so that contaminants would not percolate down. This is the shape of cave conservation almost everywhere: not restoration of paintings but the slow, expensive purchase and rearrangement of the ground above them.

The Bayarri group's radar surveys show why the ground matters. The layer above the Polychrome ceiling does not exceed nine metres, and the soil on top of that is ten to thirty centimetres. The central fracture — the one earlier conservators sealed with cement mortar — runs about 7.5 metres down and works as a direct water route to the painted ceiling. Altamira is not deep. It is a painted surface under a field.

Forty-three years of instruments

The ministry publishes its conservation bibliography, and reading it end to end is the single best corrective to the reopening story. It begins in 1981 with a scientific-technical project for the conservation of the paintings and runs, without a gap of more than two or three years, to 2024. Its subjects are rock-surface temperatures, radon ventilation, carbonic gas equilibrium, percolation water, moonmilk, bacterial diversity, fungal threat, isotopic sampling, moisture mapping and CO₂ scenarios. There is no volume in it about visitor experience.

Take one entry as representative. Sainz and colleagues, publishing in 2022, inventoried rapid air-exchange episodes in the Polychrome Room using radon and carbon dioxide as tracer gases across 2015 to 2020. Radon monitors logged hourly and were physically replaced every fourteen days; CO₂ was read every fifteen minutes. They identified thirty-seven degassing-recharging events, mostly in spring and autumn, with an average lag of 5.3 ± 2.7 hours between the CO₂ and radon signals.

The reason that work exists is stated without drama. Knowing which fluctuations the weather produces on its own allows the team to discriminate more clearly the real anthropic influence, avoiding false alarms. That is the whole logic of the five-a-week regime in one clause. The cave is not being visited and monitored; it is being monitored, and five people a week are the experimental variable. Somebody has to know what the room does when nobody is in it before anybody can say what it does when five people are.

The carbon dioxide of people who are no longer there

The most useful single document in this file is Sáez and colleagues' 2024 paper in Scientific Reports, which reconstructs Altamira's CO₂ from 1950 and projects it to 2100. In situ measurement only exists for limited stretches — chiefly 2007 to 2012 in the Polychromes Hall, with calibration points from 1997–1998 — so the authors built a data-driven model driven by outside temperature and soil moisture and ran it backwards.

What it gives is a portrait of the tourist decades that no photograph conveys. Without visitors, modelled concentrations sit in a 3,000–4,000 ppm band. With them, the 1970s run at a mean of roughly 15,000 ppm, with maxima approaching 20,000 and, under realistic assumptions about how visits clustered through the day, up to 30,000. Under the restricted 1982–2002 regime annual maxima fell to 4,400–5,500 ppm — better, but still around 730 ppm above the unvisited baseline on average. An estimate from 1997 put micro-corrosion of the rock surface at 78 times the theoretical value derived from natural phenomena alone.

The projection is the part that resists a redemptive ending. Under the warming scenario the authors treat as most probable, annual CO₂ maxima in the cave reach 7,000–9,000 ppm from about 2070 — higher than anything recorded in the 1980s or 1990s — driven not by people but by sharper temperature gradients outside and more complete winter stagnation inside. The cave's chemistry will deteriorate whether or not anybody is admitted. Removing the visitors removed a cause. It did not remove the problem, and the modelling says the problem is scheduled to get worse on a timetable no access regime can touch.

Water is doing what the visitors did

The same conclusion arrives by a completely different route in the remote-sensing work published by Bayarri, Prada, García, De las Heras and Fatás between 2023 and 2024, some of it by museum staff. Laser scanning at 2.7 mm accuracy, drone photogrammetry at 2 cm ground resolution and ground- penetrating radar at 100, 400, 900 and 1,600 MHz were combined to map, in three dimensions, how water reaches the painted ceiling.

It reaches it through fractures, and one drip zone — logged as ALT-1, about 1.2 square metres, sitting at the hind legs of the great bison — has been photographed repeatedly since 2004. Across the eighteen years to 2022 the team records numerous drip spots that have occasionally washed away the paint. Not faded it. Washed it away.

Their assessment of the cement mortar earlier conservators used to seal the central fracture is equally unsentimental: the intervention produced significant changes in the water courses and worsened deterioration close to where it was applied. That is worth sitting with. The paintings are currently being damaged by rainfall and by a twentieth-century repair, in a cave with almost no visitors, and the strictest access regime in Europe cannot address either.

What people carried in

The microbiology is the part of the story that most obviously refuses to end. In January 2008 — during the second closure, while the reopening argument was live — González, Portillo and Saiz-Jiménez of the CSIC published a short account of bacterial diversity at Altamira that reported metabolically active groups not previously described there, including sulfate-reducing bacteria, Crenarchaeota and Acidobacteria. Their warning was general and unhedged: mass tourism, lighting installations and other modifications of cave conditions could produce unpredicted changes in the microbial communities. Their recommended objective was to keep such caves as close as possible to the conditions that had preserved them for thousands of years.

Two years earlier, in the same newsletter series, the museum's then director and its head of conservation had set out the opposing philosophy just as plainly: that heritage is preserved in order to be used — to be known and to be seen. Both positions are published by Spanish institutions, two years apart, in the same place. Nothing since has reconciled them, and the five-a-week regime is best read not as a resolution but as the smallest possible experiment that keeps both propositions alive.

Lascaux, which never came back

The comparison everyone reaches for is the right one. Lascaux, found in 1940, closed to the public in 1963 because tourism was degrading the ecosystem of the painted walls. It has never reopened. A biological proliferation threatened it again around 2000, and the French Ministry of Culture ran two successive microbial research programmes — 2009–2011, jointly with INRA Dijon and the CSIC's natural resources institute in Seville, and 2014–2017 under Lyon — the second of which explicitly abandoned the aim of eliminating dominant species in favour of understanding the community as a whole.

The parallels with Altamira are close enough to be instructive. France also bought and sanctuarised the hill: vehicles banned from the access road since 2014, a replacement route built, the car park to be removed and replanted, all to reduce pressure from roughly 250,000 people a year visiting the replica. France also stopped an intervention when the science turned: in January 2015 its scientific council validated shutting down the CO₂ extraction system in the lower network. France also pays: the state's declared commitment is €600,000 a year for a cave nobody visits.

The instructive difference is that France never restored access and does not describe itself as having a visiting regime. Spain kept a door, made it very small, and has therefore spent forty years answering a question France stopped asking.

What the dating fight does and does not settle

One further thread deserves reporting carefully, because it is usually reported badly. In 2012 Pike and colleagues — a list of authors that includes Altamira's own de las Heras and Lasheras — published uranium-series dates on calcite over and under art in eleven Spanish caves, Altamira among them. The minimum ages they obtained were 40.8 thousand years for a red disk, 37.3 thousand for a hand stencil and 35.6 thousand for a claviform-like symbol. Their own stated conclusion was a fork: either cave painting belonged to the cultural repertoire of the first anatomically modern humans in Europe, or Neanderthals painted caves too.

We want to be exact about the limits here. That abstract does not attach each of those three ages to a named cave, and the Altamira-specific follow-up — García-Diez and colleagues in the Journal of Archaeological Science in 2013, on the long sequence of rock art at Altamira — sits behind a publisher that would not let us read it. So we can report that Altamira was among the caves dated, and that minimum ages of that order were obtained across the set, and we cannot tell you from a source we opened which mark in which chamber carries which age. Anyone who tells you flatly that Altamira's hand stencils predate modern humans in Iberia is going further than the abstract does.

Why the Silence Index is 44, and what "ongoing" means

This is a low score for a nearly sealed place, and the reasoning is the point. Physical remoteness scores close to nothing: Altamira is thirty kilometres from Santander, a few hundred metres from a car park, in a municipality of about four thousand people. Visitor volume is the opposite of silence — a quarter of a million people a year come to the hillside. Access friction to the cave interior itself is close to the ceiling of our scale; five permits a week is among the tightest regimes on any accessible heritage site on earth. The fourth input we have weighted is unresolved questions, and it is high: the closure year, the compatibility question the 2012–2014 programme was convened to answer, and the status of the current regime are all genuinely open. Averaged at 30/30/20/20 that comes out at 44, and we would rather publish a low number honestly than award the nineties to a place with a ticket office.

The gap we could not close is the one that matters most. We could not find a ministry document confirming that five people entered Altamira in the week you are reading this, nor how those five are now chosen; the museum's visiting pages would not open for us and are listed among our failures below. What we can say is that the ministry still presents the regime in the present tense, and that Spain's own 2024 report to UNESCO records between 136 and 255 people a year entering the cave — a figure that only makes sense if the cap is being applied week after week, year after year. UNESCO's statement of outstanding universal value is written in the same key: access by people is a risk factor, and accessibility is defined by the carrying capacity of each cave.

That is the shape of the afterlife of the most famous discovery in the history of prehistoric art. Not a rescue, not a reopening, not a solved problem. A trial that began as a two-year programme, produced a cap of five, and has run for eleven years without anybody announcing that it finished. Somewhere in Cantabria this week, in all likelihood, five people are being counted through a door, and instruments that log hourly are recording what they do to a room a rockfall sealed thirteen thousand years ago.

Getting there — Santander airport → Torrelavega → Santillana del Mar; the museum is signposted from the village

  1. Getting to the hillside is easy and nobody pretends otherwise. Santander airport sits about 43 kilometres east; Torrelavega is the nearest sizeable town; Santillana del Mar is a village of roughly four thousand people with the museum a short distance outside it. This is not a remote place and the dossier's low Silence Index reflects that.
  2. Getting into the cave is a different machinery entirely, and it is the reason this piece exists. Since March 2015 the Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira's board has operated what the Ministry of Culture calls a strict access regime of five people a week. That is the whole provision. There is no permit class, no researcher exemption we could document, and no published queue.
  3. We were not able to establish from any ministry document how those five places are allocated, or on which day of the week the entry happens. It has been widely described as a draw among visitors already in the museum, and that may well be right, but we could not open a primary source saying so and we will not repeat it as fact. Anyone planning around it should ask the museum directly and treat any secondhand account of the mechanism as unconfirmed.
  4. Assume, as a working baseline, that you are visiting the replica. Spain's own reporting to UNESCO makes the arithmetic plain: a quarter of a million people a year reach the museum and something between 136 and 255 reach the cave. The replica is not a consolation prize in this system; it is the system.
  5. If the point of the trip is to stand inside a genuine painted Palaeolithic cave, the honest advice is to go elsewhere in the same World Heritage property. What to pack

  • Low expectations about the cave itself, held firmly. The overwhelmingly likely outcome of a trip to Altamira is that you see an extremely good replica and no original paintings at all.
  • Reading, ideally the ministry's own conservation page, before you go. The exhibition is better if you already know that the ceiling survived because a rockfall accidentally sealed it.
  • Wet-weather clothing. This is the Cantabrian coast, and the rain that inconveniences you is the same water that is currently washing pigment off the ceiling underground.
  • A plan for the rest of the day. The museum is not a full day, and the surrounding Cantabrian cave country is the actual reason to be in the region.
  • Nothing that needs to go into the cave. If you are among the five, you will be told what the conditions are, and they will not be negotiable.

Where to stay

Santillana del Mar is a heavily visited historic village and carries most of the accommodation within walking distance of the museum, which is the practical choice if the museum is the reason for the trip. Torrelavega, about eight kilometres south, is a working town of some 55,000 people and the unglamorous alternative with better transport connections. Santander, roughly thirty kilometres east and a city of about 173,600, is where the airport is and where most visitors actually sleep, treating Altamira as a half-day out. There is nothing to stay in at the cave itself and there should not be: the entire conservation strategy since the late 1990s has been the removal of human activity from the ground above the painted ceiling, and the road and museum access were both diverted for that reason. If you are choosing a base for the wider Cantabrian cave country rather than for Altamira alone, Puente Viesgo puts you at the foot of Monte Castillo, where you can go underground properly.

Safety & responsible travel

  • Do not describe Altamira as having reopened. It did not. A board agreed a capped access regime in March 2015 under a research programme convened to ask whether visiting is compatible with survival at all, and that question has not been publicly answered.
  • Treat the replica as the point rather than the substitute. The Neocueva carries the entire visiting function of a World Heritage property, and resenting it misunderstands what the site now is.
  • Do not campaign for wider access on the basis that conservation is solved. The published modelling projects cave CO₂ maxima of 7,000–9,000 ppm from around 2070 on climate forcing alone, and repeat imaging shows drip water washing paint off the ceiling between 2004 and 2022.
  • Respect the ground above as part of the monument. Spain bought land, closed tracks, removed livestock installations and moved the road between 1997 and 2001 because the painted ceiling lies under no more than nine metres of rock and thirty centimetres of soil.
  • If you want to enter a real decorated cave in Cantabria, use the ones that are managed for it. That is what their carrying-capacity limits are for, and it takes pressure off the one that cannot take any.

Nearby, and quieter

The most instructive thing near Altamira is the rest of the same World Heritage property. Eighteen caves across Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country were inscribed together in the 2008 extension, and they are managed on a spectrum: Spain's 2024 return to UNESCO records eight of them closed to the public entirely and ten admitting visitors under carrying-capacity limits. The Monte Castillo caves above Puente Viesgo, some forty kilometres south-east, are the accessible counterpart to Altamira's near-total closure — El Castillo at 43.29243°N, 3.96537°W and Las Monedas a few hundred metres away, both genuine painted caves you can walk into. Santillana del Mar itself is a preserved medieval village that receives its own considerable tourism independent of the cave. And two hours' drive west along the same coast the property continues into Asturias, at Tito Bustillo and Peña de Candamo, which is the point at which the scale of what was inscribed in 2008 stops being an abstraction: this is not one famous ceiling but a regional tradition that ran for tens of thousands of years.

Editor’s method note — what we checked, corrected and could not verify
  • Desk research only. Nobody from this publication has visited Altamira, and this dossier makes no claim to have seen either the cave or the replica.
  • Every URL cited was opened and read before citation. Sources that could not be opened are listed further down this note and are cited nowhere in the piece.
  • The central claim — that March 2015 produced an access cap rather than a reopening — rests on the Ministry of Culture's own conservation page, which in Spanish reads 'un estricto régimen de acceso de cinco personas a la semana' and in English 'a strict access regime of 5 persons per week'. We quote the ministry rather than characterising it.
  • We print three published years for the first closure and name each source: 1977 on the ministry's Spanish page, 1979 on the English version of the same page, and a first closure of 1978–1982 in Sáez and colleagues (2024). The museum's own directors, writing in 2006, tie the closure to the state's acquisition of the cave in 1978. We do not average these and we do not choose between them.
  • Similarly, we print both 'over 175,000 visitors in 1973' (Lasheras and Heras, 2006) and 'a peak of 174,613 visits in 1972' (Sáez et al., 2024); and both the published 1982 ceiling of 8,500 a year and the 11,320 a year that Sáez and colleagues give as actual attendance across 1982–2002.
  • The date the current regime began is also unsettled between primary sources. The ministry dates the board's decision to March 2015; Sáez and colleagues write that access 'was resumed in 2014'. We report both and suggest, without asserting, that they describe experimental entries followed by a formalised regime.
  • On whether the regime is still running, we rely on two things and say so in the body: the ministry presents it in the present tense under a heading meaning 'current visiting regime', and Spain's 2024 periodic report to UNESCO records 136 to 255 people a year entering the cave across five reporting years — figures that sit just under five a week and cannot be produced any other way. The periodic report does not label those years, so we do not assign them to calendar years.
  • We could not confirm from any ministry source how the five weekly places are now allocated. We were told at commissioning that selection has been by lot among visitors already in the museum on a given day; we found no primary document stating that, and we therefore do not state it. The museum's visiting pages did not open for us on repeated attempts.
  • On the uranium-thorium dating, we quote only the Pike et al. (2012) abstract, which we opened. That abstract does not assign its three minimum ages to individual caves, so we do not attach any of them to a specific Altamira motif, and we flag that the Altamira-specific 2013 follow-up was unreadable to us.
  • Sources we could not read, and therefore did not cite: the Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España programme pages at ipce.cultura.gob.es, which failed on every attempt; the Museo de Altamira's own visiting, opening-hours and admission-price pages, and the pages for the Neocueva and for the discovery, none of which returned content; Science's own page for Pike et al. (2012), which returned 403; the Journal of Archaeological Science paper by García-Diez et al. (2013) and the Science of the Total Environment radon paper by Sainz et al.
