Visiting What Is Leaving: Responsible Glacier Tourism
In August 2019, Icelanders held a funeral for a glacier. Okjökull — “Ok” for short — had thinned past the point where it could move under its own weight, which is the definition of the word glacier, and so it was formally declared dead. The bronze plaque bolted to bare rock near Húsafell is titled “A letter to the future” and ends: only you know if we did it. You can walk to it in an hour or so from the car park. It is the only memorial in this journal’s coverage area erected to a landscape feature by the people who outlived it.
The plaque frames the problem this note exists to handle. Iceland’s glaciers are simultaneously the country’s headline attraction and its most public casualty. Hundreds of thousands of people a year now walk on, climb into, or sail past ice that the measurements say is leaving. That creates a genre of travel — the industry calls it last-chance tourism — with an obvious moral tangle: the witnessing is valuable, the flying and driving that deliver the witnesses are part of the cause, and the crowds themselves can damage the thing they came to mourn. What the measurements actually say
The numbers are not ambiguous. Iceland’s glaciers have lost roughly a fifth of their area since 1900, and almost half of that loss has happened since 2000 — around 750 square kilometres gone in two decades, an average of roughly 8 billion tonnes of ice a year, among the fastest measured rates of glacier loss in the world. The monitoring is done by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences and partner agencies, published in the peer-reviewed literature and summarised annually; Vatnajökull National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site — maintains a plain-language account of what is happening to the ice it was created to hold. Individual outlets make it vivid: Sólheimajökull, the subject of D-010, has been measured retreating since 1930 and now ends in a meltwater lagoon that did not exist a generation ago. None of this is contested science, and a guide who tells you otherwise on the ice has told you something important about their operation.
The first rule: go guided, and choose the guide
Glaciers are the one landscape in this journal where we advise against solo access without exception. Crevasses, moulins and collapsing terminal ice kill experienced people; the 2024 ice-cave collapse at Breiðamerkurjökull, which reshaped how winter cave tours are run (see D-006), was a reminder that even commercial sites carry real hazard. Guiding in Iceland was unregulated for a long time; since 2014 the Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides (AIMG) has built a certification ladder — the Hard Ice courses, with staged supervision requirements and mandatory wilderness first-aid — that functions as the de facto standard. Operators advertise it. Ask directly: are your glacier guides AIMG-certified or trained to AIMG standards? A serious operator answers in one sentence. Group size is the other tell — smaller ropes mean more supervision and less trampled staging ground.
The second rule: the glacier sets the schedule
Cancellations, rerouted walks, caves that close mid-season: on a shrinking glacier these are not service failures, they are the safety system responding to ice that changes faster than brochures reprint. Book refundable, build slack into the itinerary, and treat a turned-back day as information. The operators most willing to cancel are generally the ones most worth paying.
The third rule: leave the surface alone
The etiquette on the ice is short. Stay on the guided line — the route exists because someone probed it that morning. Take nothing: meltwater channels, ice formations and even loose moraine stone are part of a system being measured; the park asks that it be left in place. Add nothing: sunscreen residue, food scraps and the micro-litter of wrappers are concentrated by melt into the water below, which in Iceland is often somebody’s drinking supply. Drones need permission in the national parks and are restricted near wildlife and other visitors; the silence over the ice is part of what everyone paid for. And the social-media theatrics — standing in blue meltwater pools, hammering ice for the sound, flying close over a calving front — are the behaviours that close sites for everyone after they go wrong once.
The harder question: should you come at all?
An honest note has to hold this question open rather than answer it with a slogan. The case against is plain: most visitors reach Iceland by air, and aviation’s emissions are part of why the plaque at Ok exists. The case for is quieter but real: the glacier economy funds the guiding profession, the rescue infrastructure and a good share of the monitoring attention; and the testimony of people who have stood on the ice — who have heard a glacier drain and crack under their feet — is worth something in a world deciding how much it cares. UNESCO’s own writing on Vatnajökull frames the balance as preservation versus profit without pretending the tension resolves.
If you come, come once and stay longer, rather than often and briefly. Let one glacier walk carry the weight, instead of collecting all five like stamps.
What we can add as method: travel in shoulder season, when pressure per day is lower; spend where the money holds communities rather than passes through them; and treat the carbon of getting here as a budget you justify with depth, not breadth. What witnessing is for
Ok’s plaque is addressed to the future, but its verb is present tense: only you know if we did it. A glacier walk arranged with care — certified rope, small group, schedule surrendered to the ice — is not consumption of a dying thing. It is attendance. The ice keeps its own ledger in ash layers and moraines, and it will record what this century did either way; the only open question, the one the plaque asks, is what the people who saw it chose to do afterwards. Go home and answer it.
