The Drawings That Kept Their Secret: The Nazca Lines

On 1 August 2026 a Cessna Caravan carrying sightseers over the Nazca Lines declared an emergency, lost radio contact and came down. Thirteen people died — seven Italians, two Germans, two Spaniards and both Peruvian pilots. It was the fifth fatal crash on this sightseeing run since 2008, and the death toll across those five now stands at thirty-eight.

The flight, and what has happened since

This is a desk-researched dossier; nobody from this publication has been to Nazca. It is built from UNESCO, Peru's Ministry of Culture and transport ministry, the Yamagata University Nasca Institute, peer-reviewed journals, and established news reporting.

We normally put practical matters at the end. This one leads, because the situation is twelve days old and the standard travel advice for this site is now out of date in a way that could get someone killed.

Peru's transport ministry has preventively suspended the operator, Aerodiana, pending regulatory verification and a separate accident investigation. The aircraft carried no conventional black box. The transport minister's public statement was unusually unguarded: accidents occur "sometimes from mechanical failures, sometimes from human failures and possibly from improper things. All of that is being investigated." Flights had already been suspended the previous day for winds over 40 km/h.

Then, on 3 August, Spain's foreign ministry advised its citizens to avoid Nazca overflights altogether, stating that the aircraft do not meet maintenance and safety standards equivalent to Spanish requirements. That is a national government telling its people not to take a specific tourist activity in a country it does not otherwise restrict.

The record it sits on top of, verified crash by crash:

April 2008 — five French tourists killed when an Aero Ica aircraft struck high-voltage power lines near the airfield; the pilot survived. February 2010 — seven dead, three Chileans and four Peruvians, after engine failure. October 2010 — six dead, four British tourists and two Peruvian crew, mechanical failure. February 2022 — seven dead, three Dutch, two Chilean and two Peruvian crew, the aircraft exploding on impact shortly after take-off. And August 2026 — thirteen.

Reporting around the latest crash notes allegations of lax supervision of the several dozen ageing aircraft that fly these tours. We could not establish whether other operators are still flying. That is the single most perishable fact here, and anyone considering a flight should establish it directly rather than trusting a booking page.

There is an alternative, and it is the honest one to point at. The observation tower on the Panamericana lets you see three figures from the ground for about twenty soles. It shows you less. It has never killed anybody.

The survey that nearly doubled the count

Now the part that makes this site genuinely exciting again, and which almost no travel coverage has caught up with.

In September 2024, a team from Yamagata University working with IBM published a survey in PNAS that added 303 new figurative geoglyphs to a corpus that had taken nearly a century to reach 430. The total is now 733.

The method deserves precision, because "AI discovers Nazca Lines" is not what happened. A convolutional neural network was trained on 406 known relief-type figures and run over 629 square kilometres of aerial imagery at ten centimetres per pixel. It proposed 47,410 candidate boxes. Human archaeologists narrowed those to 1,309, then walked the desert between September 2022 and February 2023 confirming them on foot. The hit rate was roughly one authentic geoglyph per thirty-six AI suggestions, and the whole thing took 1,200 hours of screening and 1,440 hours of fieldwork.

So the machine did not find them. The machine made it possible for people to look in the right places. Discovery ran at about 1.5 geoglyphs a year through the twentieth century, and 18.7 a year from 2004; this produced 303 in six months.

There are two completely different things out there

The survey's real intellectual payload is not the count. It is that the geoglyphs divide into two classes that differ in almost every respect, and conflating them has muddled a century of interpretation.

Line-type geoglyphs average 90 metres. About 64% depict wild animals — birds, monkeys, felines, spiders, whales. There are no humanoids and no domestic animals among them. They sit within the formal network of straight lines and trapezoids, averaging 34 metres from a geometric geoglyph, and they date to the Nasca period, especially 50 to 300 CE. The interpretation is communal: built and used at community level for ritual activity, along paths oriented toward the Cahuachi temple complex.

Relief-type geoglyphs average nine metres — a tenth of the size. And their subject matter inverts: 81.6% are human-related, with 33.8% humanoids, 32.9% decapitated heads, 14.9% domesticated camelids and only 6.9% wild animals. They cluster along informal winding trails, averaging 43 metres from a path, and they are older — Initial Nasca or earlier, before 100 BCE. The reading is individual rather than communal: objects to be viewed while walking, conveying information about human activity. Roadside signs.

One class is a cathedral. The other is signage. They were made by different people at different times for different audiences, and the fact that they share a desert is close to the least interesting thing about them.

The strongest physical evidence for ceremonial use is not visual at all — it is the smashed pottery. The line-type figures functioned as ritual places shaped like animals, where people held ceremonies that involved the deliberate destruction of pottery vessels.

The calendar theory is dead, and Maria Reiche deserves better than that sentence

The idea that the pampa is a vast astronomical calendar has been tested properly, and it fails.

A 2021 study in Applied Sciences built a GIS database of 2,308 straight lines and tested them against solar events — solstices, equinoxes, zenith passages — and seven bright stars across the Nasca period, correcting for Earth curvature, refraction and horizon visibility. Only 99 lines, about 4%, aligned with solar events. That is within chance. The conclusion is unambiguous: the number of hits does not justify the theory that the Nasca pampas are an astronomical calendar system. Gerald Hawkins had reached the same conclusion by 1969.

Maria Reiche spent fifty years on that hypothesis, and the cheap version of this story is that she was wrong. The 2021 team's finding is more interesting and more generous: every geoglyph alignment Reiche identified does point at the celestial body she said it did. Her measurements were sound. What failed was the generalisation — she had selected the lines that worked.

The structural problem, which the same paper notes, is that there are no comprehensive scientific publications of her results. She recorded measurements and calculations in diaries and sketches. A lifetime of accurate fieldwork was never properly published, which is its own quiet tragedy.

And her actual legacy is not theoretical at all. Reiche was a German mathematician, born in 1903, who arrived in Peru in 1932 and entered the Nazca problem in 1941. She spent decades measuring, cleaning and physically defending the pampa — chasing tourists and vehicles off the lines, fighting a government plan to run irrigation canals across them, defending the site in Peru's Congress. She lived in a hotel room beside the lines until her death in 1998, aged 95. UNESCO's own citation names her personally.

Her theory failed. Her fieldwork was accurate. Her guardianship is the reason there is still a site to argue about.

What actually threatens them

Not aliens, and not, primarily, tourists.

UNESCO's own text records that the South Pan-American Highway crosses the property directly and has damaged some lines and figures, while noting most remain in fair condition. The visible incidents are real but small: a Greenpeace banner laid beside the hummingbird during COP20 in 2014, for which the organisation apologised and the criminal case closed in 2017 without conviction; and a truck driven onto the pampa in January 2018, damaging three geoglyphs across roughly fifty by a hundred metres and leaving deep scars.

The serious threat is mining, and in 2025 it produced a genuine scandal.

On 28 May 2025 Peru's culture ministry cut the national Nasca Archaeological Reserve from 5,633 km² to 3,236 km² — removing about 2,397 km², some 42.6%, and leaving more than a hundred archaeological sites outside protection. The minister said it did not affect the World Heritage property or its buffer zone, and justified the change by two decades of archaeological study.

The objection was that the excised land is where extraction is expanding. A former vice-minister of environment put it directly: the reduction removes protections precisely where extractive activity is growing. More than 2,500 informal-miner registrations sat inside the original reserve. UNESCO said it had not been notified. A 2024 culture ministry report had named Nasca the province most affected by illegal mining in Peru.

It was reversed on 8 June 2025 — eleven days later — and the boundary is back to 5,633 km². By July, prosecutors were investigating the culture minister and three other officials over alleged offences against archaeological monuments, dereliction of duty, abuse of authority and possible bribery.

One correction worth making, because the wire copy got it badly wrong. Several international outlets described the cut as "over 1,000 hectares," or about 1,400 football pitches. The actual excision was roughly 240,000 hectares — some 240 times larger than reported. And it was the national reserve that shrank, not the 753 km² World Heritage property; those are different designations and conflating them is the other common error.

Why the Silence Index is 57

Access friction is low: four hundred kilometres of paved highway from Lima, buses from about forty-five soles, and a tower on the roadside. Footfall is substantial and concentrated on a handful of viewpoints. What lifts the score is the pampa itself — 753 km² of stone desert where the great majority of 733 figures have no visitor infrastructure at all and are reached, if at all, on foot by archaeologists. The unresolved column is unusually genuine here: after a century of work, the purpose is still argued over, and a survey in 2024 found three hundred figures nobody knew existed.

What they were for

The honest current answer is: ritual and procession, at two scales, for two audiences — and we are still finding the evidence.

That is less satisfying than a calendar and much less satisfying than a landing strip, but it has the advantage of being what the ground actually shows. The line-type figures sit in a network of ceremonial paths pointing toward Cahuachi, with smashed pottery in them. The relief-type figures sit beside walking trails and show people, camelids and severed heads at a size you could take in while passing.

These were not messages to the sky. They were messages to whoever was walking past — and the reason they kept their secret for so long is that we spent a century looking at them from aeroplanes, which is exactly the wrong altitude for four fifths of them.

What to pack

  • Motion sickness medication if you fly. The aircraft bank hard and repeatedly so both sides of the cabin get a view.
  • Sun protection. This is one of the driest deserts on Earth and there is no shade at the tower.
  • A polarising filter if you are shooting from the air — the haze over the pampa flattens everything.
  • Water, and cash in soles.

Where to stay

Nasca town is small, functional and geared almost entirely to the lines — hotels and hostels at every price, most within walking distance of the airfield and the bus station. Ica, two hours north, is bigger and pairs the site with the Huacachina oasis and the vineyards. Palpa, half an hour north of Nasca, sits beside the older Paracas-era hillside figures and is far quieter than its neighbour. Most people give the whole thing a single night, which is about right for the flight and the tower and much too short for the museum and Cahuachi.

Safety & responsible travel

  • Never walk on the pampa. The figures are made by removing dark surface stones to expose pale ground beneath; a single set of footprints lasts for centuries. A truck driver did visible damage across 50 by 100 metres in 2018.
  • Weigh the overflight honestly. Five fatal crashes since 2008, 38 dead, one operator suspended and a European government advising its citizens not to fly. The tower shows you less and has never hurt anyone.
  • Do not repeat the ancient-astronaut material, even as a joke. It has real consequences for how a living archaeological programme is funded and treated.
  • Be sceptical of the calendar story too. It was tested on 2,308 lines in 2021 and produced solar alignments at the rate you would expect from chance.
  • If you write or post about the 2025 boundary row, get the designations right: the national reserve was cut and restored; the World Heritage property was not touched.

Nearby, and quieter

Cahuachi, the adobe ceremonial complex about 25 km west of Nasca, is where the line-type geoglyph network appears to point, and is the most useful thing to see if you want the figures to mean something. The Chauchilla cemetery, with mummies still in situ in open tombs, lies south. The Palpa geoglyphs are older and on hillsides, which means they can be seen without an aircraft. The María Reiche museum, in the house where she lived and worked, is the site's conscience.
