The photographs that made Lake Natron famous show birds and bats apparently turned to stone, perched upright, wings half open, mid-life. The photographer explained how he made them, on the record, in 2013: he found the animals already dead on the shoreline and arranged them on branches. The myth, and what actually happens

This is a desk-researched dossier; nobody from this publication has been to Lake Natron. It is built from Ramsar, IUCN, the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program, NASA, peer-reviewed limnology and ornithology, Tanzanian government documents, BirdLife and Nature Tanzania, and established news.

Nick Brandt's 2013 series Across the Ravaged Land produced the images that fixed this lake in the public mind. They are extraordinary photographs and he has never hidden how they were made. In his own words: "I took these creatures as I found them on the shoreline, and then placed them in 'living' positions, bringing them back to 'life', as it were." For the fish eagle, "we placed him on a strong branch pushed into the shallow water."

They are arranged still lifes. That is a legitimate artistic act, openly declared. What followed — a decade of coverage describing a lake that petrifies living animals — is not his doing.

The chemistry settles it. The geochemist Thure Cerling put the correction plainly: "There is almost no calcium in the lake." What calcium arrives in the inflowing fresh water precipitates out as it hits the alkaline body. Animals that die there — of natural causes — become coated in sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, and salt-encrusted as the water level drops. That is efflorescence and desiccation. It is closer to natron mummification, the process the Egyptians used, than to petrification.

The pH is 9 to 11.5 in the peer-reviewed literature, and a 2024 survey of eastern rift soda lakes measured 9.0 to 10.2. Alkaline, certainly. Not the pH 12 flesh-dissolving cauldron of the viral version, and that figure appears in no primary measurement we could find.

And the lake is not sterile. Endemic Alcolapia cichlids live in these alkaline waters, tolerating pH up to 10, alkalinity above 300 millimoles per litre and temperatures over 40 °C. One recorded a field critical thermal maximum of 45.6 °C — the highest ever recorded for a fish. There are fish in the lake that supposedly kills everything.

What the lake actually is

A shallow dish of soda about 58 kilometres long, mean width around 15 kilometres, and — this is the number that surprises — half a metre to two metres deep. Its maximum surface area is around 875 km², and between 2013 and 2017 mudflats were exposed roughly half the time. It periodically dries almost completely to isolated lagoons.

Water comes in from the perennial Ewaso Ng'iro, rising on Kenya's Mau Escarpment, plus hot springs running 32 to 50 °C. Around 907 million cubic metres arrive a year and none leaves — there is no outflow. Rainfall is under 500 millimetres. Everything that enters, stays and concentrates.

The alkalinity comes from the volcanism: molten mixtures of sodium and calcium carbonate salts percolating through faults into the springs. The evaporites are trona, thermonatrite and kogarkoite, with a vast trona pan a metre and a half thick across the central and north-eastern lake. And the red that gives the article its title is biology — blooms of haloarchaea, salt-loving microbes, colouring the shallows.

Three quarters of the world's lesser flamingos

This is the real claim on the world's attention, and it is stronger than the myth.

Lake Natron is the only significant and regular breeding site for the East African population of lesser flamingo — a population of 1.5 to 2.5 million birds, which is over 75% of the world total. The species is listed Near Threatened, the global population is 2 to 3 million, and it is declining. Research published in 2024 found that flamingo distribution is best explained by phytoplankton biomass — food availability — across the region's soda lakes.

Why here? Because of a hydrological knife-edge. The birds nest on salt-crystal islets that only emerge at precise water levels. Too high and no nests can be built; too low and predators simply walk in. Breeding succeeds only when levels are intermediate and falling. And the lake is large, hot, dry and dusty enough that predators cannot reach the centre.

Which means breeding is not annual, and coverage that implies otherwise is misleading. In February 2019 — a bumper year — surveys counted 1,750,000 adults and 995,000 chicks, against 760,000 adults and 120,000 chicks the year before. Then nothing until 2025, when they bred for the first time in six years and about 50,000 chicks hatched by March. Individual birds may mate only once every four or five years.

The volcano is not dormant

Ol Doinyo Lengai stands 2,962 metres above the basin and is the only volcano on Earth known to have erupted carbonatite lava in historical time. Its natrocarbonatite is dominated by nyerereite and gregoryite, erupts at roughly 495 to 544 °C — cool enough that it flows like a mudflow rather than glowing — and turns from black to pale tan within hours of reaching the surface.

Most coverage says it last erupted in 2008. That is wrong by eighteen years. The 2007–08 phase was the violent one: Plinian columns to 6 or 7.6 kilometres between late August and October 2007, ashfall lasting over twelve hours on Engare Sero eighteen kilometres north, villagers reporting skin rashes. But the current eruption began on 9 April 2017 and was still listed as continuing as of 31 March 2026 — low-power thermal anomalies and small lava effusions from the central hornito, contained within the summit crater.

And it is inflating. GNSS data show rapid uplift from March to December 2022 continuing into August 2023, modelled as a source expanding 2.3 kilometres beneath the crater. Anyone climbing it is ascending an actively effusing, currently inflating volcano.

The mine that keeps coming back

The soda ash story is usually told as a battle won in 2008. It was won again in 2025, and it is not over.

The original proposal, from 2006, was a joint venture between Tata Chemicals and Tanzania's National Development Corporation. It would have needed 106 cubic metres of fresh water an hour, 11.5 megawatts, and 21 tonnes an hour of coke, coal and limestone, for about 152 permanent jobs. A Ramsar Advisory Mission in February 2008 recommended Tanzania suspend the decision-making process on the environmental assessment. In 2018 the corporation dropped Natron and pivoted to Engaruka.

Then in January 2025 it came back. The industry minister announced a revival at a meeting in Mto wa Mbu: 14.4 billion shillings allocated, a million tonnes a year targeted, and 6.2 billion shillings of compensation for about 595 people. Between May and July, Nature Tanzania and the local community organisation ran seventeen meetings across nine villages under the banner "Our Lake, Our Life." Every village opposed the dredging proposal.

In August 2025 the deputy minister for minerals halted it: only traditional surface collection of naturally occurring soda ash along the lake's edge is permitted. The industrial project moved to the Engaruka basin, fifty-odd kilometres away — 3.8 billion cubic metres of reserves, 500,000 tonnes a year, $640 million for two plants, production targeted for 2027.

As of July 2026, BirdLife, Nature Kenya and Nature Tanzania were still jointly calling for the lake's protection. Read the status honestly: the mine is dormant, not dead. It has been revived twice. And what stopped it in August 2025 was a ministerial statement, not legislation.

There is an irony in the timing. In early February 2025, high water levels physically halted soda-ash exploration at the lake. The same rise that stopped the miners is the one drowning the flamingos' nesting islets.

Protected on paper

Lake Natron Basin is Ramsar Site No. 1080, designated on 4 July 2001, covering 224,781 hectares — Tanzania's second Ramsar site. Tanzania reaffirmed its Ramsar commitments at COP15 in July 2025.

Its status under Tanzanian law is Game Controlled Area. That is the weakest tier of wildlife protection in the country. It permits human settlement and livestock, and gives the site nothing like national-park enforcement. There is no national park and no game reserve over the lake. The strongest protection Lake Natron has is an international treaty listing and the fact that the people who live there keep saying no.

Who lives there, and a distinction that matters

The basin is occupied by Maasai pastoralists and Sonjo agro-pastoralists in semi-nomadic grazing systems, with populations limited by dry-season fresh water. Over 20,000 people depend directly on the lake for tourism, irrigation and herding.

Engaresero has been recognised by the FAO as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System since 2011 — for Maasai pastoralism, Zebu cattle, Red Maasai sheep, and land management judged compatible with conserving the lake. Community tourism runs through a local development initiative with forty trained guides working on rotation between herding and guiding, and visitor fees feeding a fund that supports schooling past the age of fourteen. At Natron, the Maasai are the tourism operators, and they were the constituency that stopped the 2025 mine.

Now the distinction, because it is important and it is routinely got wrong. Tanzania's Maasai displacements of recent years — the 1,500 km² demarcation announced in June 2022, the violence documented by Human Rights Watch, the East African Court of Justice case dismissed that September, and the relocation of over 82,000 people from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — took place in Loliondo division and in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Both are in Ngorongoro District. Neither is the Lake Natron shore, and Engaresero was not among the villages in the court case.

It would be wrong to write that the Maasai of Lake Natron were evicted. What is true, and more useful, is that Natron's communities hold their land under the same weak Game Controlled Area tenure that produced those displacements elsewhere in the same district — which is why their mobilisation against the mine was framed as a question of land and survival rather than of birds.

Why the Silence Index is 81

Access friction is high: six to seven hours by 4×4 from Arusha on rough road, a Game Controlled Area fee that rose sharply in January 2025, and no scheduled transport. Footfall is genuinely low — this is not on the northern circuit, and the accommodation is a handful of camps. The acoustic floor is exceptional: a shallow soda lake in a rift basin with no industry, no road noise and, in the right season, close to two million birds. What holds it below the highest band is that the site is reachable in a day from a major tourist hub, and that a US Level 3 advisory covers the whole country rather than singling this place out.

Wetter is not safer

The threat here is not what anyone expected.

A satellite analysis of twenty-two East African soda lakes from 1999 to 2022 found phytoplankton biomass declining across the region, driven primarily by rising water levels. Degradation is worst in equatorial Kenya and northern Tanzania. Lake Nakuru grew 91% in area between 2009 and 2022 while its chlorophyll-a halved. Northern Tanzanian lakes showed the largest surface-area increases in the study.

The drivers are increased rainfall over recent decades plus deforestation, and East African rainfall is projected to increase further under climate change.

For a lake whose flamingos can only nest when the water is at an intermediate level and falling, that is close to the worst possible trend. More water means fewer islets, means fewer nests. The researchers' conclusion is that continued decline would render Lake Natron unsuitable for breeding — and there is nowhere else in East Africa that these birds regularly go.

The lake that supposedly turns things to stone is, in fact, drowning the only nursery its signature species has.

Getting there — Arusha → Lake Natron (4×4, about 6–7 hrs)

  1. Arusha is the gateway. The drive is six to seven hours by 4×4, the last stretch on rough road, and it is not a route for a saloon car or a solo first-timer.
  2. There is no scheduled public transport and no airstrip service you can rely on. Almost everyone arrives with an operator, and at Engaresero the guiding is run by the community initiative — forty trained guides working on rotation between herding and guiding.
  3. Entry is via the Lake Natron Game Controlled Area, and Tanzania raised Game Controlled Area tariffs steeply in January 2025 — the driver entry fee alone rose about 650%. We could not open the official tariff portal; get a current figure from your operator in writing.

What to pack

  • Far more water than you think, and rehydration salts. This is a hot, dry rift floor with hot springs feeding it.
  • Real boots for Lengai — the ascent is steep, loose ash and rock, climbed at night.
  • Sun protection at the level you would take to a desert, because that is what this is.
  • Binoculars. The flamingos are on islets in the lake centre, deliberately out of reach of anything that walks.
  • Cash. There is no banking infrastructure at the lake.

Where to stay

Accommodation is a small number of camps and lodges around Engaresero on the south-western shore, ranging from basic tented camps to a couple of more comfortable options — all of them modest by northern-circuit standards, which is part of why the place stays quiet. Most visitors come for one or two nights, either as a break between the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro or specifically to climb Lengai overnight. There is no town, no supermarket and no bank. Arusha is the last place with full services, six to seven hours back down the road.

Safety & responsible travel

  • Do not walk out toward the flamingos. The birds nest in the centre precisely because nothing can reach them there, and disturbance at a colony that only breeds once every few years is not a small thing.
  • Do not repeat the calcification story, and be sceptical if a guide tells it. The photographer explained in 2013 that he posed animals he found already dead, and the lake contains almost no calcium.
  • Book through the community initiative at Engaresero where you can. The guiding rota and the development fund are the mechanism by which tourism money reaches the people who blocked the mine.
  • Take nothing from the salt pan and leave nothing on it.
  • If you write about the Maasai here, get the geography right. The 2022 evictions were in Loliondo division and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, not on the Natron shore.

Nearby, and quieter

Ol Doinyo Lengai rises directly south of the lake and is the reason most people come — the only volcano on Earth erupting natrocarbonatite lava, and currently active. The Engare Sero footprints, a site of hundreds of late-Pleistocene human tracks preserved in volcanic mudflow near the lake's southern shore, are among the most significant palaeoanthropological finds in East Africa. The Serengeti lies west and Ngorongoro south-west; Natron is often taken as the quiet northern end of that circuit, which is exactly why it is worth more than a night.

  • We do not repeat the calcification story except to correct it. The photographer stated publicly in 2013 that he arranged animals found already dead, and a geochemist quoted in the same reporting cycle confirmed the lake contains almost no calcium.
  • We are careful on the Maasai section. The 2022 displacements were in Loliondo division and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — the same district, different places. We state the tenure connection and decline to state an eviction that did not happen here.
