The Sky That Stayed Dark

Four sources give four different sizes for this reserve, and they differ by 26,000 hectares — an area larger than Liechtenstein. The night sky above it has been measured at better than 22 magnitudes per square arcsecond, which is roughly the darkest reading physics allows. And the circles on its grass plains have been declared explained at least four times since 2013, most recently in 2024, by researchers who still disagree with each other in print.

The reserve, and the number that will not settle

This is a desk-researched dossier. Nobody from this publication has been to NamibRand. It is built from DarkSky International's certification files and the reserve's own annual reports to that body, from IUCN, UNESCO, Namibia's environment ministry and the Atlas of Namibia, from peer-reviewed ecology in Science, Nature, Landscape Ecology and PLOS ONE, and from the licensed operators.

The reserve began with one bad farm. In 1984 Albi Brückner — J.A. Brückner, a Windhoek businessman — bought Farm Gorrasis, overgrazed and shot out, for what Travel News Namibia records as the price of a Volkswagen Beetle. He kept buying, including 100,000 hectares of adjoining land in his sixtieth year. In 1992 the assembled land was registered as a non-profit private nature reserve; today it is an incorporated association not for gain, formed from seventeen former livestock farms whose owners signed a constitution setting the land aside for conservation. Brückner died on 8 December 2016. The reserve's website still lists him as chairman, which indicates how recently parts of it have been updated.

How big is it? Depends entirely on whom you ask, and this is not a rounding difference.

We are not going to average these. The likeliest explanations are that the certified dark-sky boundary is not the same polygon as the landholding, and that the association's membership has both gained and lost farms over four decades — the 2016 annual report to DarkSky notes the incorporation of Farm Dina, about 12,480 hectares, as new buffer. What can be said is that it is somewhere between 1,700 and 2,150 square kilometres, that it shares a 100 km boundary with Namib-Naukluft National Park, and that the direction of travel is meant to be upward: the reserve has committed to doubling in size over the next ten to twenty years as neighbouring farmers retire, under a project called NamibRand East. No hectare total for that expansion has been published.

What it is not is a national park. Namibia's twenty state protected areas cover about 17% of the country and NamibRand is not among them. It receives no government money; its entire operating income is a daily per-bed fee paid by five tourism concessions. That fact determines almost everything else here.

The gold tier that no longer exists

In May 2012 the International Dark-Sky Association — now DarkSky International — certified NamibRand as an International Dark Sky Reserve. The reserve describes the award as gold tier, "the darkest and the strictest available category," and only the second place on Earth at that grade. Africa's first, and the first in any developing nation.

All true in 2012. Two things have happened since, and almost no coverage reflects either.

First, the tier system is gone. The October 2015 reserve guidelines set explicit thresholds on a Unihedron Sky Quality Meter: gold above 21.75 mag/arcsec², silver 21.74 to 21.00, bronze 20.99 to 20.00. The 2018 guidelines that replaced them contain no gold, silver or bronze at all. A reserve now needs a core where the Milky Way is readily visible, no significant glare and only dim horizon light domes — "approximately a visual-band zenith luminance of 21.2 magnitudes per square arcsecond" — plus a buffer of at least 700 km². DarkSky's listing for NamibRand records two things: designated 2012, land area 2,022 km². No tier. The gold is a label the reserve kept and the certifying body stopped issuing.

Second, NamibRand is no longer alone on the continent — though the usual correction to this is also wrong. It remains, as far as we can establish, Africa's only Dark Sky Reserve. It is not Africa's only Dark Sky Place. !Ae!Hai Kalahari Heritage Park in South Africa, 500 km² co-managed by ‡Khomani San and Mier representatives with SANParks, became a Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2019. Lapalala Wilderness, more than 48,000 hectares in Limpopo, was certified a Dark Sky Park on 22 September 2025, the 250th Dark Sky Place worldwide. Three African places, three categories, one Reserve. Lodge marketing saying "Africa's only International Dark Sky Reserve" is accurate; travel writing using it as shorthand for the only certified dark sky in Africa has been wrong since 2019.

What the meters actually read

The reserve has run a fixed Unihedron Sky Quality Meter since July 2012 and a narrow-field portable SQM-L since October 2013. Its annual reports to DarkSky are public and more interesting than the marketing.

On one night in the 2016 report the fixed meter exceeded 22 magnitudes per square arcsecond. That is at or beyond the natural floor: total natural night-sky brightness at zenith, with no artificial light at all, is around 22.0 mag/arcsec², with airglow, zodiacal light and the Milky Way's own integrated starlight setting the limit thereafter. Nowhere on Earth does meaningfully better.

The portable survey is the honest counterweight. Over 22 to 24 September 2016, readings at nineteen locations across the reserve ranged from 21.56 to 21.73 mag/arcsec². In 2015 the NaDEET Centre inside the core read 21.60, up from 21.31 the year before; a point on the C27 read 21.79. Several of those sit below the old 21.75 gold threshold. That is not a scandal — a portable meter at head height near a building measures something different from a fixed zenith logger on a clear moonless night, and the report notes "almost no change in the darkness of the sky" year on year. But it corrects the idea that certification is a single number rather than a monitoring programme and an audited inventory of light fixtures.

The circles, and the argument that will not close

NamibRand's grass plains are stippled with bare circles two to twelve metres across, ringed by taller grass, spaced with a regularity that looks engineered. Walter Tschinkel measured them here in 2012 from repeat satellite imagery of 605 high-confidence circles and established what nobody now disputes: they are born, they mature and they revegetate. Roughly 1.67% die each year. Average lifespan came out at about 41 years, small ones near 24, large ones 60 to 75. Whatever makes them is a process, not a feature.

What that process is has been argued in the literature for thirteen years, and the argument is live in 2026. What each side holds:

The termite case

Norbert Juergens, of the University of Hamburg, published in Science in March 2013 that the circles are made by the sand termite Psammotermes allocerus, which clears vegetation after rain and thereby banks soil moisture under the bare disc — a perennial reservoir the colony and the ring of surviving grass both live on. His evidence is correlation at scale: termites recorded at more than 1,700 circles across Namibia, Angola and South Africa. His second line, with the soil scientist Alexander Gröngröft in a 2023 Perspectives in Plant Ecology, Evolution and Systematics paper, is physical rather than biological. Soil-moisture readings at four depths to 90 cm, run hourly since 2008, show water moving downward. Below roughly 8% moisture by volume the hydraulic conductivity of sand collapses; under the circles it sits at or under 5%. The conclusion is blunt: the horizontal transport of water over metres within days that the rival model requires is, on current soil physics, impossible.

The self-organisation case

Stephan Getzin, of Göttingen, holds that no animal is needed. Grasses compete for water; the competition is scale-dependent; the mathematics produce hexagonally spaced gaps on their own. His evidence is process measurement inside the circles. Soil-moisture sensors logging every 30 minutes across ten Namib regions from the 2020 dry season to the end of the 2022 rains showed grass inside the circles dying before any root damage appeared — termite root damage showed up 50 to 60 days after rainfall, long after the grass was dead. His 2024 follow-up added roughly 500 grass plants across four regions and several hundred soil-moisture measurements over the 2023 and 2024 rainy seasons, and named the mechanism: the top 10 to 12 cm of sand inside a circle is a death zone for germinating seedlings, while the perennial tussocks on the rim draw from 20 to 30 cm and deeper. His challenge to the other camp is specific and checkable — that no field study has published systematic root-length measurements of dying grasses showing termites eating them.

What the last four years added

Not a resolution. Four things worth knowing.

A 2017 Nature paper by Tarnita and colleagues at Princeton argued that the two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive: coupling competition between subterranean insect colonies with scale-dependent plant feedbacks reproduces the observed multi-scale patterning, which they say neither mechanism alone can. It is nine years old and still the most quoted attempt at reconciliation, which tells you something.

In 2023 a team led by Fiona Walsh, working with Martu and Nyiyaparli knowledge holders, dug 60 trenches in 24 Australian circles. Every trench found termite chambers; live Drepanotermes harvester termites were in 41%. The Australian circles, long the independent test case for self-organisation, turned out to be termite pavements — linyji — known as such to Aboriginal people for generations. Getzin and co-authors replied in January 2024 that Walsh's pavements are not the same objects as the periodic circles near Newman. The two literatures have not merged since.

In 2023 an AI survey of over half a million satellite images found 263 further candidate sites worldwide, in Madagascar, south-west Asia and elsewhere, correlated with low nitrogen and very low soil moisture; critics say some lack the geometric regularity that defines the phenomenon. A 2025 Scientific Reports paper reached 98% detection accuracy and declined to adjudicate causation.

And in June 2025 Michael Cramer and Walter Tschinkel — the man who measured the lifespans — published a review in Perspectives in Plant Ecology, Evolution and Systematics titled Fairy circle research: Status, controversies and the way forward. Nobody writes that title about a solved problem.

The recurring failure is the headline "mystery solved," and it is not a one-off. It has run on Juergens in 2013, Getzin in 2022, Juergens again in 2023 and Getzin again in March 2024 — four solutions in eleven years, at least two mutually exclusive, each reported as final. The 2022 round produced Göttingen's press release "Secrets of Namibia's fairy circles demystified"; the 2023 round produced Hamburg's "Termites as cause of fairy circles in Namib Desert confirmed." Both universities are reputable. They cannot both be right.

The thing to hold onto is that the two camps are not arguing about the same evidence, which is why neither result settles anything. Juergens has spatial correlation across three countries and soil physics that constrains the rival mechanism. Getzin has time-resolved measurement inside individual circles and root architecture that constrains the rival mechanism. Juergens has never shown a termite eating the roots of the grass that is dying, at the time it dies. Getzin has never shown the horizontal water movement his model needs in sand at 5% volumetric moisture. Each side's strongest evidence is a hole in the other's — the shape of an open question.

Two smaller corrections. The circles are not unexplained "crop circles" of unknown origin — every serious hypothesis is ecological and testable, and the disagreement is about mechanism, not about whether nature made them. And the "gold tier" in almost every article about this sky is a category DarkSky no longer awards.

One bed per thousand hectares

The conservation model is a single arithmetical rule, and it is the most transferable thing here. Guest beds across the whole reserve are capped at one per 1,000 hectares — with a maximum of 25 at any one location by the reserve's own statement, 20 per lodge according to Expert Africa, a discrepancy we could not resolve. On the middle size estimate that is a ceiling of roughly two hundred beds in an area the size of Luxembourg.

Five concessions operate under it: the Wolwedans collection, &Beyond's Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, Kwessi Dunes with twelve rooms, the self-catering NamibRand Family Hideout, and NaDEET, the education centre, which takes 30 to 35 Namibian school groups a year and puts around a thousand children and community members under that sky. Each pays a daily per-bed fee. There is no gate and no public entry: you are inside because a licensed operator has a bed for you.

Two things follow that the brochures do not say. The reserve's income scales with occupancy, so a bad tourism year is a conservation funding crisis — a private balance sheet, not a parliamentary appropriation. And the darkness is downstream of the same rule: there is no glow on any horizon because the cap makes it impossible to build enough to produce one.

Practicalities, with the numbers that changed

The approach is the C27 gravel road, from Sesriem in the north or Aus in the south. Natural Selection gives Sesriem as 75 km and one to two hours, Windhoek as 370 km; the reserve's own material says roughly 500 km from Windhoek, and Tschinkel's paper places it 290 km south-south-west of the capital. Road distance, driving route and straight line — all correct, all different. Several lodges fly in; the Aandstêr strip was paved in early 2023 with 500,000 bricks to make a 1.2 km runway.

Sesriem, the Sossusvlei gate, is a separate park with separate fees — N$150 per foreign adult per day plus N$50 for a car of up to ten seats. The Namib Sand Sea inscribed by UNESCO in 2013, 3,077,700 hectares under all four natural criteria, lies wholly within that park and does not include this reserve. NamibRand borders the region's headline attraction; it is not part of it, and that is the entire reason it is quiet.

Entry to Namibia changed on 1 April 2025: nationals of 33 countries now need a visa, issued on arrival at N$1,600 for non-African-Union passports and N$1,200 for AU passports. The US State Department has Namibia at Level 2 as of May 2026, flagging opportunistic crime and distance from emergency medical care. Rainfall on the reserve runs 70 to 80 mm a year, up to 100 on its eastern edge, against 15 on the coast. Winter nights go below freezing, which matters, because stargazing is an activity performed standing still in the dark.

Why the Silence Index is 84

Footfall is capped by arithmetic rather than intention, which is the most reliable kind of cap: one bed per thousand hectares, five operators, no day entry. Access friction is high — no public transport, no walk-in, a gravel approach, and prices that work as a second gate. The acoustic floor is now externally certified: Quiet Parks International named this Africa's first Wilderness Quiet Park, and the world's fourth, in August 2024, though we could not obtain the decibel measurements behind the award. The unresolved question is written across the plains in circles four research groups cannot agree on.

It does not score higher for two reasons. The comfort is total, and a wilderness experienced from a well-appointed lodge is a wilderness with an asterisk. And the model is fragile in a way a national park is not: every hectare of this silence is paid for nightly by people who could stop coming. A fee is not a statute.

Getting there — the C27 approach

  1. Fly into Windhoek (Hosea Kutako International). Check whether your nationality now needs a visa: Namibia introduced visa-on-arrival requirements for 33 countries on 1 April 2025, at N$1,600 for non-African-Union passports and N$1,200 for AU passports.
  2. Self-driving, the approach is the C27 gravel road — from Solitaire and Sesriem in the north or from Aus in the south. Natural Selection gives Sesriem to the reserve as 75 km and one to two hours, and Windhoek as 370 km and five to six. The reserve's own material says about 500 km from Windhoek. Both are right; they are different routes.
  3. Carry two spare tyres and a real puncture kit. Last fuel is Sesriem, Solitaire or Aus depending on the direction of approach.
  4. Fly-in is common and several lodges use private strips. The Aandstêr strip was paved in early 2023 — 500,000 bricks, a 1.2 km runway.
  5. Arrive before dark. Gravel at night is how visitors get hurt in Namibia, and the reserve's game is active on the roads.
  6. You cannot enter without a booking. There is no gate, no ticket office and no day-visitor route; private vehicles inside the reserve are restricted to lodge access roads.

What to pack

  • A genuinely warm layer. Winter nights on the plains fall below zero, and stargazing is a stationary activity.
  • A red-light head torch. The lighting discipline here is audited annually and reported to DarkSky International; white light is not a small discourtesy.
  • Binoculars. Under a sky reading above 21.5 mag/arcsec², ordinary 8x42s resolve structure in the Magellanic Clouds and more open clusters than you can work through in a night.
  • Two spare tyres if self-driving the C27, and more water than a grassland looks like it needs.
  • A power bank. Some camps limit generator hours deliberately.

Where to stay

Only inside, and only by booking ahead. Five concessions share the whole reserve under a cap of one guest bed per 1,000 hectares: the Wolwedans collection, &Beyond's Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, Kwessi Dunes with twelve rooms, the self-catering NamibRand Family Hideout, and NaDEET, which is an education centre rather than a lodge and takes school groups of 30 to 40 learners. There is no camping outside the concessions and no casual accommodation. If the rates are beyond reach, the guest farms and campsites along the C27 corridor outside the boundary sit under substantially the same sky at a fraction of the price — without the reserve's interiors, its guiding, or its lighting discipline.

Safety & responsible travel

  • Follow the lighting rules exactly. The certification rests on an audited fixture inventory across every lodge and staff compound, and one unshielded white floodlight is measurable.
  • Stay on access roads. Tracks across pro-Namib grassland outlast the driver.
  • Do not describe the fairy circles as solved, in either direction. Two research groups are still publishing against each other, and your guide is entitled to say so.
  • Understand what your bill is doing. This reserve gets no state money; the daily per-bed fee from five concessions is the entire conservation budget.
  • Sesriem and Sossusvlei are a different, state-run park with their own fees and their own crowds. Do not conflate the two — the whole point of NamibRand is that it is not that.

Nearby, and quieter

Sossusvlei and the Sesriem gate are 75 km north, inside Namib-Naukluft National Park and inside the Namib Sand Sea World Heritage property inscribed in 2013 — 3,077,700 hectares under all four natural criteria. That park absorbs the region's traffic, which is exactly why NamibRand stays empty. South, the Tiras mountains and the Aus area have guest farms under skies nobody has certified. Further afield, the other two African Dark Sky Places are both in South Africa: !Ae!Hai Kalahari Heritage Park, a Sanctuary since 2019 on the Kgalagadi edge, and Lapalala Wilderness in Limpopo, certified a Dark Sky Park on 22 September 2025.

  • Desk research only. No one from this publication has been to NamibRand. Where a claim rests on a single operator's marketing page we say so in the text rather than laundering it into fact.
  • We treated the reserve's size as contested rather than settled. Four published figures exist — 172,200 ha (SpaceNews, 2012), 188,980.16 ha (the reserve's own about page, corroborated by Time's 730 square miles in 2025), 202,200 ha (IUCN, and DarkSky's 2,022 km² certified area) and 214,836.90 ha (PANORAMA, corroborated by Expert Africa). We print all four. The previous version of this article gave a single round figure of roughly 200,000 ha with no indication that the number is disputed.
  • We corrected the dark-sky framing in two directions at once. The gold tier is real history but a dead category: the October 2015 reserve guidelines set gold above 21.75 mag/arcsec², and the 2018 guidelines that superseded them contain no tiers at all. DarkSky's own current listing for NamibRand gives only the designation year and the land area. Separately, NamibRand is still Africa's only Dark Sky Reserve but has not been Africa's only Dark Sky Place since 2019, when !Ae!Hai Kalahari Heritage Park was certified a Sanctuary; Lapalala Wilderness became a Dark Sky Park on 22 September 2025.
  • We added measured numbers where the previous version had adjectives. The reserve's own annual reports to DarkSky, which are public, record a fixed-meter night above 22 mag/arcsec² and a nineteen-point portable survey reading 21.56 to 21.73 in September 2016 — several of those below the old gold threshold. We report the spread rather than the best single reading.
  • The fairy-circle section was rewritten from the primary literature on both sides rather than from any one review. We read or verified Juergens 2013 in Science, Getzin et al. 2022 and 2024 in PPEES via the Göttingen releases, Juergens and Gröngröft 2023 via Hamburg, Tschinkel 2012 in PLOS ONE, Tarnita et al. 2017 in Nature, Walsh et al. 2023 and the Getzin rebuttal of January 2024 in Nature Ecology & Evolution, Getzin et al. 2024 in Landscape Ecology, and the Cramer and Tschinkel review of June 2025. We state what each side's strongest evidence is and what each side has not shown, and we do not declare a winner.
  • We corrected the founder's status. Albi Brückner died on 8 December 2016; the reserve's website still lists him as custodian and chairman.
  • We separated NamibRand from Sossusvlei explicitly. The Namib Sand Sea World Heritage property inscribed in 2013 lies wholly within Namib-Naukluft Park and does not include this reserve, and the Sesriem entry fees are a different park's tariff.
  • Three paywalled papers are cited through their Crossref records rather than the publisher pages, because Science and ScienceDirect refused automated access.   • Coordinates for the key locations come from the GeoNames gazetteer, whose reserve entry (25°S, 16°E) agrees with the position DarkSky's own place page carries. Both are rounded to the degree, so the reserve pin marks the middle of a landholding roughly the size of Luxembourg rather than any particular feature. NaDEET and the Aandstêr airstrip are absent: neither the reserve nor NaDEET publishes a coordinate for them.
