Three Ways to Be the Largest Room on Earth

In February 2011 a survey team spent four days and three nights inside a hole in a Bornean mountain, aiming a laser scanner into a darkness no lamp has ever crossed. When the returns — about 12.9 million of them — were assembled, two things appeared that thirty years of exploration had missed: domes in the roof, 115 and 105 metres above the boulder floor. The same model cut the chamber's published volume by a fifth. Sarawak Chamber had been called the largest underground void on Earth since 1981. Measuring it properly did not settle that claim. Gua Nasib Bagus — Good Luck Cave — opens on the northern side of the Melinau Paku valley in Gunung Mulu National Park, in the far north of Sarawak. It is a resurgence: water comes out of it. To reach the chamber a caver follows roughly a kilometre and a half of active streamway inland and upward, and then the walls stop being walls. The floor rises steeply under limestone blocks the size of vehicles, and the river vanishes beneath them. Past that point a lamp lights rock at your feet and nothing at all beyond it, in every direction, including up.

The chamber was found during Mulu '80, a British–Malaysian expedition led by Andy Eavis and Ben Lyon that ran from December 1980 to March 1981 and surveyed over fifty kilometres of new passage. The Mulu Caves Project's account has the scientist Hans Friederich spotting the entrance while monitoring an experiment; days later Eavis, Tony White, Dave Checkley and Danny Lawi went in and found the space. They mapped it the only way anyone could in 1981 — compass, clinometer and survey tape, walking the perimeter station by station. The eastern half alone took seventy-seven legs of thirty metres; in all, about a hundred stations in roughly twelve hours of continuous work.

What that method gives you is a good floor plan and a bad ceiling. The expedition published the chamber as about 700 by 400 metres with a roof height estimated at 100 metres, a floor area calculated at 162,700 square metres, and a volume it called a conservative estimate: 12 million cubic metres. The project's page is candid that the figure was approximate because the surveying was incomplete. That did not stop 12 million becoming the number the world repeated for three decades.

UNESCO inscribed the park in 2000 under all four natural criteria, across 52,864 hectares, citing a Melinau Limestone about 1.5 kilometres thick, some 295 kilometres of explored cave, and uplift of roughly 19 centimetres per thousand years. Its citation gives Sarawak Chamber as 600 by 415 metres and 80 metres high — a third set of dimensions, matching neither the expedition's nor what the scanner later returned, unrevised for a quarter of a century.

What the scanner found

In 2011 the nineteenth Anglo-Sarawak expedition went back with a machine. Mulu Caves 2011 ran from 15 February to 30 March under Tim Allen, with seventeen UK members and staff from Sarawak Forestry, and reported to the Mount Everest Foundation; a three-dimensional laser scan of Sarawak Chamber was among its stated aims. The team trialled it in Deer Cave first, against tropical humidity; it reached about half a kilometre.

Inside the chamber the party — including Kevin Dixon, Meg Stark and Andy Eavis, thirty years after he first walked into it — worked nine scan stations over four days and three nights underground, checking each scan on a laptop in case the beam found roof passages nobody had seen. It logged about 12.9 million points at an accuracy of ten to twenty centimetres, the longest single measurement being 605 metres from the first station. Mornings were misty, which absorbs laser energy; one battery died overnight and the instrument woke covered in condensation.

The model that came out is the best description of the chamber anyone has. Volume: 9,579,205 cubic metres. Floor area: 164,459 square metres. Two roof domes, at 115 and 105 metres above the floor. A circle 325 metres across fits inside the floor plan. Eight hundred metres of the basal fault show in the point cloud. The measured volume came in about a fifth below the estimate quoted since 1981, while the measured floor area came out slightly larger. Both directions of error are what the method predicts: a tape walked round a perimeter is a reasonable way to get an area and a poor way to guess a roof.

The genuinely disputed part

The same 2011 report did something else. It reanalysed existing survey data for the two Chinese chambers long ranked second and third, giving the Miao Room — listed in older, French-derived literature as Salle de Miaos — a volume of 7,060,374 cubic metres over 117,765 square metres of floor, and Cloud Ladder Hall 5,846,973 cubic metres over just 51,158. It also recorded, in passing, the judgement that is the crux of the whole argument: the Miao Room, it noted, is "passage-like".

Two years later a National Geographic Society-funded expedition working under China's Institute of Karst Geology in Guilin took a scanner into Gebihe, in Ziyun Getu He Chuandong National Park in Guizhou. The chamber had been known since 1989. The instrument was a Riegl VZ-400, reported as the first use of that class of scanner in a cave, taking up to 122,000 measurements a second; engineers at Lancaster University processed the returns, with graduate engineer Jonathan Milburn leading the analysis. The British co-leaders, Richard "Roo" Walters and Tim Allen — the same Tim Allen who had led the Mulu expedition — announced the result at Hidden Earth, the British national caving conference, in September 2014.

The Miao Room came out at 10.78 million cubic metres, about ten per cent above Sarawak Chamber's scanned volume. Its floor area, on National Geographic's own figure of 1.27 million square feet, is roughly 118,000 square metres — within a whisker of the 117,765 the Mulu team had derived from the old survey. Two independent efforts agree almost exactly on the Miao Room's floor and differ by more than fifty per cent on its volume. The disagreement lives entirely in the roof.

Guinness World Records now keeps two entries. Largest cave chamber by volume: the Miao Room, at 10,780,000 cubic metres. Largest by surface area: Sarawak Chamber — and here the figure is 154,530 square metres, given as of 2015, with dimensions of about 700 by 300 metres and a height of at least 70 metres. That is a third floor area for the same room, some six per cent below the number published by the team that scanned it, and no source found in preparing this piece explains the difference.

So the honest position is not that one chamber won. It is that several quantities are argued about under one word. Floor area, where Sarawak Chamber leads on every published figure. Volume, where the Miao Room leads on the only laser measurement either has had. Roof height, where neither is close to Cloud Ladder Hall, a chamber with under a third of Sarawak Chamber's floor beneath a ceiling reported at 365 metres. And beneath all three, the boundary question: when does a very wide river passage stop being a passage and start being a chamber? The Mulu surveyors raised it in 2011 with a single adjective, and nobody has since published a rule.

Whose ground this is

Mulu is not empty country with caves in it. UNESCO records a split arrangement — Sarawak Forestry Corporation holds protection and enforcement, Borsarmulu Park Management Sdn Bhd runs the tourism zone — while Penan and Berawan communities live around the boundary with claims that predate both.

The IUCN World Heritage Outlook assessment finalised in October 2025, which rates the property "good with some concerns", is unusually direct about what those communities have built. Penan communities in and around the park have documented more than a thousand georeferenced named sites, with video narration, inside their own territory. The assessment treats their resource-management concepts — tana' pengurip, mihau, molong — as a working system, and recommends recruiting Penan as rangers because they know the remote watersheds eight wilderness-zone staff cannot cover. It is blunter on process: decisions are frequently taken without consultation, and the Special Park Committee, meant to include local stakeholders, met only a handful of times between 2000 and 2023. Of the Berawan and Tring it says something quieter and more damning — that their role is highly valuable but less is publicly known, for want of research in the public domain.

That documentary work is not incidental. Mongabay reported that in November 2017 sixty-three Penan communities completed twenty-three maps of their central Bornean territory after fifteen years. In August 2019 the Borneo Post reported that seven Penan and seven Berawan plaintiffs, from eleven communities including Batu Bungan, Long Terawan and Long Iman, sued to annul provisional leases over 4,440 hectares granted to Radiant Lagoon in 2008 for a ninety-nine-year oil palm plantation on the park's edge; counsel See Chee How said more than 5,500 villagers were affected. The IUCN assessment records that on 15 June 2020 the disputed area was instead announced as an addition to the park; Mongabay reported the concession revoked, quoting Komeok Joe of the Penan organisation Keruan saying the plan was now history, and the Berawan activist Willie Kajan saying the next threats still had to be stopped. Visitors on the standard Clearwater tour stop at Batu Bungan; it is a village with a market, not an exhibit.

Why it looks like that

The mechanism worth understanding is not why the chamber is big, but why its two headline numbers are set by two unrelated things — which is why the record can be split at all. Start with the rock. The Mulu Caves Project's geological summary describes three Tertiary formations laid down in an outer-arc basin associated with subduction along the now-inactive North-West Borneo Trench: the Mulu Formation of sandstones and shales, the Melinau Limestone, and the Setap Shale. The limestone is roughly 1,500 metres thick and folded into open periclines with high-angle reverse faults. Two of its statements matter. First, "the major fractures in the limestone are related to the folding and are the main control on cave passage development." Second, less obviously, the systems' "actual locations are more closely controlled by hydrological barriers" — recrystallised zones along faults and fold axes that dam water and send it elsewhere. Eric Gilli's study of the chamber, in Big Karst Chambers (2021), places Sarawak Chamber and nearby Deer Cave where a great thickness of limestone meets a clayey sandstone basement, and treats them as evidence that the largest chambers form beneath anticlines.

Now the two controls. The floor is drawn by water: a river running along the base of the limestone, unable to sink further because the rock beneath is impermeable, spreads sideways along the fault and the fracture set, dissolving and carrying rock away, and how far it spreads sets the footprint. The roof is drawn by rock mechanics. As the void widens, the beds above lose support and fail; blocks drop, pile on the floor, and the stream underneath removes the debris, so the void migrates upward — stoping — until the arch left behind can carry the mountain. In Sarawak Chamber the result is legible in the 2011 scan: 800 metres of fault at the base, a floor of collapse blocks tilted steeply, the river hidden beneath them, and two near-perfect domes where the arch found equilibrium.

Because those controls are independent, a chamber can be broad and low or narrow and towering, and no single number captures both. That is also why lidar mattered far more here than in a lit room. A tape-and-compass survey walks the perimeter, which is exactly where the floor is, so it estimates area well. It cannot walk the ceiling. Every roof height before 2011 was a guess made from the bottom of an unlit space hundreds of metres across, and volume is the figure most sensitive to that guess. When the roofs were measured, Sarawak Chamber's volume fell by a fifth and the Miao Room's rose by more than half. Both were the same size the day before the scan as the day after. Only the ruler changed.

Sarawak Chamber attracts superlative coverage — listicles of the world's biggest caves, social posts, casual guidebook summaries — and most of it repeats one of two errors. The first is the volume. The figure of 12 million cubic metres, published after the 1981 discovery, was a conservative estimate from a survey the Mulu Caves Project itself describes as incomplete, and the 2011 laser scan replaced it with a measured 9,579,205 cubic metres — a fifth less. An account still quoting twelve million is repeating a guess that the people who made it have since withdrawn.

The second error is the unqualified definite article. Since the Miao Room scan of 2013, "largest cave chamber" has been two records, and Guinness World Records keeps them separately: largest by volume, the Miao Room at 10,780,000 cubic metres; largest by surface area, Sarawak Chamber. A summary that says the chamber lost its title is as wrong as one that says it kept everything — it holds the floor-area record on every published figure and lost the volume record on the only laser measurements either contender has had. Even official pages disagree: Sarawak Forestry Corporation's own description still calls it the world's largest natural chamber without qualification, while the UNESCO citation carries dimensions from 2000 that match no survey.

What both errors share is the assumption that "largest" is one number. As the mechanism section above sets out, a chamber's floor and roof are drawn by different processes, and no single figure captures both. We would rather report two records and a boundary dispute than one clean falsehood.

How to actually see it

The first honest thing to say is that the standard trip does not show you the chamber, and could not. Mulu National Park's own listing states that the tour stops at the mouth, and no light a caver can carry would cross 600 metres of void anyway. What is on offer is arrival at the edge of something that cannot be seen — arguably a more accurate experience of it.

Access is by air only. Daily flights run from Miri (about 30 minutes), Kota Kinabalu (about 55) and Kuching (about 1 hour 20), and the park warns that heavy rainfall can cancel them. The operator's name has changed: MASwings, which flew this network for years, transferred it to AirBorneo on 1 January 2026, and the park's own page now points travellers there. Entry is a non-transferable five-day pass — RM30 for a foreign adult, RM15 for a Malaysian one — and shorter stays still require the full pass. From 1 February 2026 the park adds conservation charges, including RM20 for each visitor accompanied by a freelance guide or operator.

The park publishes its caving as graded activities. The Sarawak Chamber trip is listed as intermediate level within the advanced adventure caving category, and its conditions are specific:

  • Minimum party of three, maximum of six; minimum age 16; one night at Camp 1 compulsory.
  • Roughly three hours on the trail to the mouth of Gua Nasib Bagus.
  • The guide assesses water levels at the entrance, and the trip does not run if they are unsafe.
  • About 900 metres along a river channel between sheer 50-metre walls, a fixed-rope traverse of about 200 metres, then a steep boulder slope — around 120 minutes for that final section.
  • Ability to swim is essential. Bring your own headlight.
  • Applicants must show membership of a recognised speleological society, detail previous caving experience, or evidence at least three hours in a wild cave with no lighting and no pathways; the verification goes to the Park Manager for approval.
  • No refund once a party has departed the Park Office, including for fitness or water levels.

On price, both of the park's own pages now agree: MYR 315.00 per person. They did not when this piece was first researched — the adventure caving index then listed MYR 220.00 for the same activity — and the correction is worth recording as a reminder that the published figure is the one to confirm before travelling, not the one you read last year.

The cheaper option is genuinely good, and is where most people should start. Guides are mandatory in every cave. Deer and Lang caves cost MYR 35.00 per person including the guide, run about three hours over a nine-kilometre round trip, and leave Park HQ at 14:00 or 14:30 daily, timed so the walk out meets the exodus of more than three million wrinkle-lipped bats after 17:00, which costs nothing to watch from outside. Clearwater and Wind caves cost MYR 70.00 including guide and longboat, about four hours from 08:45, with a stop at Batu Bungan.

Accommodation at Park HQ is booked through the park and runs from an MYR 80.00 hostel bed upward; camping is not permitted anywhere inside the boundary. More than 90 per cent of Gunung Mulu is closed to visitors by design, and the caves on offer are a deliberately small aperture onto a very large protected area.

Why the Silence Index is 78

Footfall pressure, 21 of 30. The park received about 22,500 visitors in 2024 against what the IUCN assessment calls a notional carrying capacity of 30,000 — a ceiling it describes as a target rather than an assessed limit. Small numbers for a World Heritage site, but not zero, and there is a hotel and a daily air link. The chamber itself is another matter: parties of three to six, vetted individually, weather-vetoed at the cave mouth. The score reflects that gap.

Access friction, 24 of 30. Flights only, cancellable by rain. Then a five-day pass, a compulsory guide, three hours of trail, a river, a 200-metre rope traverse, a night at Camp 1, a minimum party size that means you cannot turn up alone, and a check on your caving history signed off by the Park Manager. What keeps this out of the high twenties is that the friction is orderly: the conditions are published, and a competent caver who plans ahead can meet them.

Acoustic floor, 16 of 20. Several hundred metres of limestone above, and no surface sound at all. The ambient noise is the buried river under the boulder floor and water arriving from a roof more than a hundred metres up. It is not silence; it is the absence of anything human, which is rarer.

Unresolved questions, 17 of 20. Three floor areas in circulation for one room, none reconciled in public. A volume record decided by a single scan of each contender. A UNESCO citation frozen in 2000 giving dimensions that match no survey. And a definitional question that one word in a 2011 expedition report raised and nobody has settled. Total: 78 — higher if Mulu were harder to fly to, lower if the measurement question had ever been closed.

What Sarawak Chamber demonstrates is not that records are meaningless but that they are answers to questions, and the question has to be stated. For thirty years one number stood in for a space nobody had seen whole, and it was wrong by a fifth. When the instrument finally arrived it did not crown a winner; it produced two winners and a boundary problem, which is what careful measurement usually does. The chamber is unchanged: a floor the size of a small town centre, a roof no lamp can find, a river running under it in the dark, indifferent to which superlative it holds.

Getting there — Miri → Mulu Airport (AirBorneo, ~30 min) → Park HQ → Melinau Paku valley on foot

  1. Mulu is reachable by air only. MASwings, a Malaysia Airlines subsidiary, flies daily from Miri (about 30 minutes), Kota Kinabalu (about 55 minutes) and Kuching (about 1 hour 20). The park warns that heavy rainfall can cancel flights.

Where to stay

Park HQ accommodation is booked directly through Mulu National Park and spans a fourteen-bed hostel dormitory at MYR 80.00 per bed, twelve Rainforest Lodge rooms at MYR 325.00 single or MYR 370.00 double, standard and family longhouse rooms, and eight Deluxe Garden Bungalows from MYR 338.00 for one person. Private rooms include breakfast; an 8 per cent tax and a RM10 tourism tax are added, a 25 per cent deposit is required at booking, and cancellation needs seven days' notice. Check-in is 14:00 and check-out 10:00. Camping is not allowed anywhere inside the park, so the only nights spent out are at the park's own camps as part of a booked activity — including the compulsory night at Camp 1 that the Sarawak Chamber trip requires. The Mulu Marriott operates nearby for those wanting hotel standards; it is outside the park's own booking system.

Safety & responsible travel

  • Take the guide requirement as a conservation measure, not a formality. The IUCN's 2025 assessment records damaged speleothems, human lint, litter and graffiti as real consequences of rising cave visitation here.
  • Do not attempt to talk your way past the experience check. It exists because the trip crosses a river channel, a rope traverse and a boulder slope in a cave with no lighting, and because rescue in that setting is extremely difficult.
  • Accept a water-level cancellation without argument. The guide making that call is the park's control on the single hazard that has the most obvious potential to kill people in this cave.
  • Treat Batu Bungan as a village. It is a scheduled stop on the Clearwater tour and a Penan community with its own market, not a display; buy from it if you want to, photograph people only with permission.
  • Recognise that the land question here is live and recent. Penan and Berawan plaintiffs from eleven communities litigated against a 4,440-hectare plantation lease on the park's edge in 2019, and the disputed area was added to the park in 2020 rather than planted.
  • Stay out of the 90 per cent of the park that is closed. The wilderness zone is patrolled by a handful of staff and the closure is the main reason the property's biodiversity values remain intact.
  • Do not repeat cave measurements as settled fact. If you cite a figure, cite who measured it, when, and with what — which is the whole lesson of this place.

Nearby, and quieter

The Pinnacles on Gunung Api — a field of razor-edged limestone blades reached from Camp 5 — are the park's other signature objective and carry their own fee supplement. The Headhunters' Trail links Mulu to the Limbang river system and also attracts a supplementary conservation charge. Closer in, the canopy walkway near Park HQ, the night walk, and the Deer Cave bat observatory require no caving competence at all. Miri, 30 minutes away by air, is the practical staging city on the Sarawak coast.

  • Desk research only. Nobody from this publication has been into Gua Nasib Bagus, and the park's own conditions make clear that this is not a trip a writer can talk their way onto: documented caving experience, verified and signed off by the Park Manager, a party of three to six, and a minimum age of sixteen.
  • The article's argument is about measurement, so we were careful to separate estimated figures from measured ones and to name which instrument produced which. The 1981 numbers are tape, compass and clinometer. The 2011 and 2013 numbers are lidar. We do not present the two as commensurable and we do not quietly average them.
  • We corrected a price. This dossier reported the park contradicting itself — MYR 315.00 on the Sarawak Chamber trip page against MYR 220.00 on the adventure caving index. Both pages now read MYR 315.00, and the passage telling readers the park disagreed with itself has been removed.
