A sonic ranger above the Ä'äy Chù bridge on the Alaska Highway had spent two years doing nothing interesting — recording the daily rise and fall of a big grey glacial river as the sun worked on the ice upstream. On 26 May 2016 the diurnal rhythm stopped and the level simply fell, for four days, and then stayed down. At the head of the valley, at the snout of the Kaskawulsh Glacier, meltwater that had run north towards the Bering Sea for roughly three centuries had found a lower way out and turned south towards the Gulf of Alaska. The paper describing it reached for a term from the geological literature — river piracy — and noted, carefully, that nobody had previously watched the thing happen.

The Kaskawulsh Glacier comes down out of the St Elias icefields in southwest Yukon, inside Kluane National Park and Reserve, and ends in a broad dirty snout that until 2016 sat astride a continental drainage divide. Meltwater leaving the north side of that snout fed a proglacial lake and then the Ä'äy Chù, known in English as the Slims River, which ran down a wide braided valley into Lhù'ààn Mân' — Kluane Lake, the largest lake in Yukon at 40,821 hectares and 91 metres deep at its deepest. The lake drains north through the Kluane River and thence by the Donjek, the White and the Yukon to the Bering Sea. Meltwater leaving the other side of the snout became the Kaskawulsh River, which runs southeast into the Alsek and reaches the Pacific in the Gulf of Alaska. Two oceans, one glacier terminus, and a divide made not of bedrock but of ice and the rubble the ice had left.
That divide had been moving for a long time. Shugar and colleagues, publishing in Nature Geoscience in April 2017, put the Kaskawulsh's Little Ice Age maximum between about 1717 and the mid-1750s, with retreat beginning in the nineteenth century and accelerating through the late twentieth and early twenty-first. The terminus pulled back 655 metres between 1956 and 2007; the width-averaged retreat from 1899 to 2016 was 1.9 kilometres. It is not a local peculiarity: the 2024 management plan for Kluane National Park and Reserve records a regional mean annual temperature rise of roughly 4°C since 1945, the loss of more than 230 small glaciers, and a 19 per cent reduction in glacier cover.
What made 2016 different was that the retreat crossed a threshold and the crossing was instrumented. The bridge gauge had run since June 2014; Environment Canada's Kluane Lake station since late 1952; the Alsek River station, 110 kilometres downstream of the glacier, since 1974. Together they caught both ends of the transaction. After 26 May the Ä'äy Chù ran 0.7 to 1.0 metres below the seasonal average for the rest of the summer, and a discharge measurement on 3 September 2016 found roughly 11 cubic metres per second in a channel that had carried around 130 before an earlier partial diversion in 1970. On the Alsek, the 2016 peak of 1,470 cubic metres per second on 20 July came within a whisker of the 41-year record and stood 87 per cent above the average peak of 783. Kluane Lake hit a record minimum in early May 2016 and by its early-August seasonal high stood about 1.7 metres below its long-term mean — short by roughly 0.67 cubic kilometres of water.
None of this happened on empty ground. Kluane First Nation, based at Burwash Landing on the lake's northwest shore, describes itself as Lhù'ààn Mân Ku Dań, the Kluane Lake People, and its territory as A sì Keyi, My Grandfather's Country. The park is co-managed rather than simply administered: under the Final Agreements of 1993 and 2003, the Kluane National Park Management Board has six voting members, two each from Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, Kluane First Nation and the Government of Canada, with the site manager ex officio and without a vote. The word "Reserve" in the park's name is not decorative; it marks the northern portion where White River First Nation, which has not concluded a land claim agreement, asserts unceded Aboriginal title. Above all of it sits the UNESCO listing: Kluane / Wrangell-St Elias / Glacier Bay / Tatshenshini-Alsek, inscribed in 1979 and extended in 1992 and 1994, 9,839,121 hectares across two countries under all four natural criteria, containing the largest non-polar icefield in the world.
What is actually in dispute
The headline claim — first documented river piracy of the modern era — is both well defended and slightly misleading, and the man best placed to say so is one of the authors.
Shugar's team wrote that previous studies of river piracy had dealt with capture over Quaternary or longer timescales, and that no one to their knowledge had detailed it in the modern era. True as stated. But John J. Clague, a co-author, had in 2006 published in Quaternary Research, with six colleagues, a reconstruction of Kluane Lake over the previous millennium that reads like a mirror image of 2016. In the late 1600s the lake rose some twelve metres above its present level, drowning forests and stranding driftwood beaches; by the 1700s it had fallen back to roughly where it is now. The mechanism they substantiated was that the Kaskawulsh's Little Ice Age advance dumped sediment into the valley, blocked the southward route, and backed the water up until it overflowed north, cutting the outlet that became the Kluane River.
Read the two papers together and the shape of the thing changes. The north-flowing Ä'äy Chù was not an ancient arrangement violated in 2016; it was itself the product of a glacier advance about three centuries earlier — as Shugar put it to his university's press office, for the last 300 years the Slims flowed to the Bering Sea and the smaller Kaskawulsh to the Gulf of Alaska. What 2016 did was return the system to a configuration it had held before. The novelty is not the direction; it is the speed, the fact that instruments were watching, and the attribution.
That attribution deserves precision, because it is routinely overstated. The paper's statistical result is that there is only a 0.5 per cent chance the glacier's retreat over the past century could have occurred under a constant climate; the authors then carry that conclusion, in their own phrase, "by extension" to the piracy. It is a strong claim about the glacier and an inferential step to the river — reasonable, since the diversion happened because the terminus thinned and pulled back, but a step, not a measurement.
The genuinely open argument is about the lake. Shugar and colleagues flagged the possibility that Kluane Lake's level could fall below its outlet at the north end, at which point it becomes a closed basin — a hydrologically different object, with no flushing, concentrating whatever arrives in it. That single sentence drove much of the coverage. In 2018 Yasmina Loukili and John Pomeroy of the University of Saskatchewan's Centre for Hydrology modelled the lake's water balance and reached a flatly contrary conclusion: the diversion cut summer peak levels by about 1.6 metres, from a median of 781.2 to 779.6 metres above sea level, but their scenarios showed "no indication whatsoever" of the Kluane River going dry or of flow reversing back up the Ä'äy Chù, and judged such events highly improbable under current and foreseeable conditions. They also flagged the weakness in their own work: discharge measurement on the Kluane River was discontinued in 1994, and they recommended it be resumed.
So the honest position is this. The 1.7-metre drop in 2016 is measured. The 1.6-metre reduction in typical summer peaks is modelled. The closed basin is neither — a hazard raised in one paper and dismissed as improbable in another, with no measured answer published.
The same discipline applies to fish, where the temptation to assert is strongest. What exists is baseline. A Yukon government survey in 2013 estimated the lake's trout population at roughly 168,712 fish, in a range of 99,487 to 240,691 — and the report itself notes that it predates the diversion and recommends reassessment against that baseline, with habitat mapping of spawning areas. McKnight, Swanson, Brahney and Hik published a 2015 limnological survey in Arctic Science in 2021, explicitly framed as the picture "prior to the 2016 'A'ą̈y Chù' diversion". Shugar's paper says only that the lake's large sediment supply has ended, with unknown effects on its structure, chemistry and ecosystems, and that changes to flow timing may affect fish habitat. Reporting by National Parks Traveler in 2021 put the Kluane chum salmon run at around 117 fish in the worst year on record against more than 16,000 in 2017; those are alarming numbers, and at the time of writing the causal chain from a diverted glacial river to a collapsed salmon return had not been demonstrated in the peer-reviewed literature. That may not hold much longer: work on the Kluane fall chum stock and the hydrological change has been under way for years, and anyone relying on this section should check for published results rather than trust a 2021 figure.
The people living with it have been less equivocal, and were describing consequences before the science caught up. Kate Ballegooyen, an environmental officer with Kluane First Nation, told Hakai Magazine about huge dust storms lifting off the dried bed, contaminants concentrating in a lake receiving less fresh water, shallower water threatening winter ice fishing for trout and whitefish, wells drying and the Kluane River running shallow over new sandbars. Sharon Kabanak, a Kluane First Nation member, described to National Parks Traveler an area at the north end that had been full of ducks and was now dry. In 2017 the territorial MLA for Kluane took the state of the lake's two public boat launches to the legislature: boats at Destruction Bay could no longer easily be floated, and the RCMP had named that launch the strategic access point for emergencies. The minister's answer was that the government did not yet know how far the lake would fall.
Why it looks like that
The mechanism worth carrying away is that a drainage divide at a glacier terminus is not a fixed feature of the Earth. It is a temporary arrangement of ice and gravel, and it can be overtopped, undercut or abandoned without anything geological happening.
The surveyed numbers make the geometry legible. In September 2016 the field team mapped a new channel 5.7 kilometres long, 20 to 100 metres wide and up to 20 metres deep, running with ice for walls, fed part of the way by a subglacial channel emerging 2.7 kilometres downstream. Its floor at the surveyed cross-section lay at roughly 785 metres above sea level. Kaskawulsh Lake, on the southern route, sat at about 755 metres; Kluane Lake at about 780; and Slims Lake, the proglacial pond that had fed the Ä'äy Chù, at about 805.
Those four numbers are the whole story. Water leaving the terminus now has a route to the sea starting fifty metres lower than the route it used to take, and the head of the Kaskawulsh River is about 25 metres below the current level of Kluane Lake. Rivers do not climb. Worse, a channel that has found a lower base level erodes downward and entrenches itself; every season of flow makes the new arrangement more secure. The paper's conclusion is that only a re-advance of the Kaskawulsh could block the channel and refill Slims Lake, that this is very unlikely on current trends, and that the drainage change is therefore permanent — geologically instantaneous, and likely irreversible.
The dust follows from the same geometry by a different route. Glaciers grind rock into silt-sized flour, and a braided glacial river spreads that flour across a floodplain kilometres wide. While the river ran, most of that surface was wet, submerged or reworked daily. Remove the water and you have a long, unvegetated, wind-aligned corridor of fine sediment lying open all season, with katabatic air draining off the icefield down the valley axis. Shugar's team recorded massive afternoon dust storms almost daily on the abandoned floodplain in the summer of 2016. Xi and colleagues, in Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts in 2022, measured PM10 spanning roughly 100 to 1,400 micrograms per cubic metre at a site on the delta across seven sampling days in May 2018, with a maximum of 1,383, and confirmed by vertical flux measurement that the outwash sediments were the source. Sayedain and colleagues, in Atmospheric Measurement Techniques in 2023, tracked the plumes by remote sensing and separated the coarse local dust from finer particles transported from Asia — noting that it was the retreat and the reorganisation that "prompted the fall of water levels and the season-long exposure of the river delta and floodplain".
Neither group treats this as a nuisance: mineral dust from glacial outwash can act as ice-nucleating particles, altering high-latitude clouds. A river that changes ocean also changes, in a small way, the sky above it.

This is the unusual part: one of the clearest documented consequences of glacier retreat anywhere on Earth is visible from a paved highway, with a visitor centre in the valley.
Haines Junction sits 160 kilometres west of Whitehorse on the Alaska Highway, and the park visitor centre is inside the Da Kų Cultural Centre there, open in 2026 from 15 May to 20 September, 9am to 5pm daily. The highway then runs north along Kluane Lake and, roughly an hour on, reaches the Thechàl Dhâl' Visitor Centre in the Ä'äy Chù valley itself — open in 2026 from 20 May to 6 September, 10am to 4pm, with exhibits developed with Kluane First Nation, an indoor space called 'Alhaashajàl Kų Yìw, the Sharing Place, and a spotting scope trained on the Dall sheep behind. For many visitors this is the whole trip, and not a lesser one: the deck looks straight down the valley the river left.
Beyond it, in ascending order of commitment:
- Soldier's Summit — a one-kilometre self-guiding interpretive trail, 20 to 60 minutes, to the site of the Alaska Highway's official opening in 1942.
- Sheep Creek — 10 kilometres, 430 metres of ascent, three to six hours, climbing the flank of Thechàl Dhâl for the standard view over the valley. No camping, no bicycles.
- Thechàl Dhâl' Ridge Route — an 11-kilometre loop with 1,310 metres of gain to 1,922 metres, six to ten hours, unmaintained and unmarked. All travel in the ridge route area is prohibited from 1 May to 15 June for Dall sheep lambing; keep 50 metres from sheep; no overnight camping.
- Ä'äy Chù (Slims River) West — the long one: 45 kilometres return over two to four days, following the west bank 22.5 kilometres past Sheep Creek and Bullion Creek to a primitive campsite at Canada Creek, most parties continuing up Observation Mountain for the view onto the Kaskawulsh. Trailhead parking is 2.6 kilometres up-valley from the visitor centre. An east route exists, rated very difficult.
The warnings, in Parks Canada's own framing: expect and be prepared for extreme dust conditions, since significant dust storms occur here, reducing visibility and affecting air quality. Bullion Creek can be difficult to cross in the afternoon or after rain — cross in the morning, when meltwater-fed creeks are lowest. Giardia has been documented; treat all water. Bear sightings are common and should be reported. There is no cellular service; Parks Canada's 24-hour dispatch is 1-780-852-3100. Permits, registration and approved bear-resistant food canisters are mandatory for all overnight use between 1 April and 15 November.
Costs are modest and published: backcountry permits at $15.00 per person per night or $105.00 annually, Kathleen Lake campground at $30.00 a night including firewood. The cheaper, quieter option is the Yukon government's Congdon Creek Campground on the lake at Alaska Highway kilometre 1666 — 103 sites, open 8 May to 1 October in 2026, no reservations, tenting only inside the electric fence because of grizzly activity. There is no public transport to any trailhead; without a vehicle the valley is out of reach.
Why the Silence Index is 58
Fifty-eight is a deliberately mid-range score, and the components pull hard in opposite directions.
Access friction is the lowest element by a distance — eight out of thirty. There is a two-lane highway along the lake, a staffed visitor centre in the valley, a day hike from the car park, and no permit at all for walking up Sheep Creek. Little in this publication is easier to reach. Footfall pressure scores far better: National Parks Traveler reported 696 people registering for overnight trips in the valley in 2018 and 430 in 2019, the numbers falling as the walking got worse. Twenty-one out of thirty. The acoustic floor is compromised in a way that is specific and slightly ironic — the highway is audible from much of the lower valley, and the valley's other sound is the wind that now lifts the silt. Twelve out of twenty.
Unresolved questions score highest, at seventeen out of twenty: whether the lake becomes a closed basin is actively contested between a Nature Geoscience paper and a university hydrology report; the fish response has baselines and no published outcome; the Kluane River discharge record has been dark since 1994. Fifty-eight is what you get when a place is trivially easy to reach and genuinely unfinished. It is not a rating of how worthwhile the visit is, and emphatically not a safety score — the dust and the creek crossings are real hazards regardless of the number.
From the visitor centre the valley reads as ordinary: a wide grey braid plain between steep mountains, the sort of thing the north has in quantity. The point is not that it looks catastrophic. It is that a divide which had held for three hundred years gave way over a long weekend, that the instruments happened to be running, and that the arithmetic afterwards was unambiguous. Kluane First Nation has been describing the consequences since the summer it happened; the literature is still working out which of them it can prove.

Where to stay
Kathleen Lake is the only Parks Canada campground inside Kluane, at $30.00 a night with oTENTik units also available. On the lake itself, the Yukon government's Congdon Creek Campground at Alaska Highway kilometre 1666 offers 103 non-reservable sites from 8 May to 1 October 2026, with tenting confined to an electric-fenced area because of grizzly activity; it has a cook shelter, bear-proof caches and a shoreline trail. Haines Junction, Destruction Bay and Burwash Landing provide the roadside services along this stretch of highway. Researchers work out of the Kluane Lake Research Station, run by the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary, which is a working field station rather than visitor accommodation.
Safety & responsible travel
- Respect the lambing closure. All travel in the Thechàl Dhâl' Ridge Route area is prohibited from 1 May to 15 June, and 50 metres is the minimum distance from Dall sheep at any time of year.
- Register. Overnight registration between 1 April and 15 November is a legal requirement and the mechanism by which anyone knows to look for you.
- Treat the dust as a health matter, not an inconvenience — measured PM10 on the delta has exceeded 1,300 micrograms per cubic metre, and the people who live downwind do not get to leave at the end of the week.
- Report bear sightings to the visitor centres. This is a working data stream, not a formality.
- Learn the Southern Tutchone names and use them: Ä'äy Chù for the river, Lhù'ààn Mân' for the lake, Thechàl Dhâl for the mountain. The park is co-managed and the names are part of that.
- Buy locally in Haines Junction, Destruction Bay and Burwash Landing. Kluane First Nation's community is the one absorbing the consequences of the change visitors come to look at.
- Do not treat the abandoned floodplain as a free-for-all for vehicles or drones; it is an unconsolidated surface inside a World Heritage property and an active research site.
Nearby, and quieter
Kathleen Lake — Mät'àtäna Män — is the park's road-accessible campground and the trailhead for the King's Throne route, south of Haines Junction. The Da Kų Cultural Centre at Haines Junction houses both the park visitor centre and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations' own interpretive space, and is the best single place to understand the co-management arrangement. North along the lake, Destruction Bay and Burwash Landing are the working communities on the shoreline, with Burwash Landing the seat of Kluane First Nation. For the wider context, the same World Heritage property continues across the border into Wrangell-St Elias and Glacier Bay in Alaska and south into Tatshenshini-Alsek Park in British Columbia — the Kaskawulsh's stolen water reaches the sea through the last of these.

- Desk research only. Nobody from this publication has walked the Ä'äy Chù valley. Every figure in the piece comes from a paper, a government page or an established news report that we opened and read.
- The spine is Shugar and colleagues in Nature Geoscience, April 2017, read in full as an author's copy rather than summarised from coverage. The gauge records, the four-day fall from 26 May 2016, the 5.7-kilometre ice-walled channel, the elevations that make the geometry legible and the 0.5 per cent statistic are all taken from it directly.
- We corrected a misattributed quotation. The line 'Slow climate change can bring us to a threshold where impacts on humans are unprecedented and fast' was credited to the University of Washington's news release. It is not there. It is John J. Clague speaking to Hakai Magazine, and the attribution has been moved.
